With respect to the SMS debate, as most of you know I'm required to communicate in a precise and formal fashion for my work (both orally and in writing). When I come on here it's refreshing to both read and write in a relaxed and shorthand style.
I love seeing the slang and abbreviations that people come up with. They make me laugh occasionally and admire the ingenuity and sense of humour behind them. You've also got to remember that people are trying to type fast to keep up with a conversation at times. Often, the pace is what makes the exchange fun. Why stultify that by insistence upon a grammatically correct form?
English has always been a living and changing language that adapts easily to new eras and different situations. To me, SMS and forum versions of the language simply add another layer and give it even more texture.
As Hugh Grant apparently said, you may be able to afford cuisine but sometimes you just want a hamburger.
