Improved Shift Action -->> read on

Changed the manual transmission and diff oil to Redline Fully Synthetic Oil after reading enough good reports from the US guys.

The shift action has definitely improved both when cold and when hot (like on the old pacific highway, wisemans then the south national park RX8 run earlier today).

tranny - Redline MT90 GL-4

diff - Redline 75W90 GL-5

Coventry Auto Parts stock the Redline stuff in Sydney or visit: http://www.redlineoil.com.au

Dealer charged me $25 bucks labour to change the tranny and diff oil during service.

I could be dreaming, but I think this worked as advertised ...

Hey Z88M.....Did your dealer have the crush washers, or did you use the originals again?

What'd they charge for the 4qts of oil, if it's not too much to ask?

Okay..I got some of this stuff last night, been meaning to do this for a while and Z88M's thread reminded me!

Simple to do, I used Gordon's idea and filled the trans and diff via a clear 1/2in hose with a small funnel attached. The fill and drain plugs aren't tight, I didn't have any metric spanners big enough so I got by with a 15/16in ringy....no worries.

Here you can see the metallic sheen on the old gearbox oil. There was a small amount of fuzz on the magnetic drain plug too.

The diff was done at the same time. Yes, I did level the car first! This is one thing I like about Hymee's system.....you can't see it!

I didn't buy any new crush washers, the dealer didn't have any and had never ordered them before. The old ones were fine.

I just picked the kids up from school....can't say I noticed any difference in the shift quality. Maybe when it's cold I'll pick up on it......I hope!

A fun project anyway! It'll pay off in the long run I'm sure :o .

Well, I found the stuff on the link that Z88M provided costed at $29/Qt. After scrounging all the Melbourne suppliers I got 4 single quart bottles at $30 each.

You'll have to try hard to get the MT90 in quart bottles, I think I found the last 2 at Pascoe Performance. It's available in gallon packs at around $115......though the distributor may have some in quart bottles, I didn't try him.

Gotta say though at this early stage I wouldn't bother doing it. Funny how the guys stateside raved about this gear? Must have been a dozen who reckoned it transformed their car...I dunno. My shift was a little notchy, still is.....

We'll see in the morning....

i really do think it is better. It was not obvious straight away, give it some time - a week or two and a bit of spirited driving to get it circulating properly.

Anyway good to get the metal shavings out after run in and synthetic provides much better protection in the long run.

Still early days, Taka. I reckon the change into second is a little smoother, Like I put custard into the gearbox, if you can imagine that! Thin custard though :p .

Could all just be the Placebo Effect though....the change in ops is that minor. The diff is no different of course, made no noise before, still doesn't. I changed the diff oil for the satisfaction of dumping the run-in stuff and any associated debris.

Ask me again in a few weeks how the box feels....

Rotoman PM'ed me about a thread I'd posted in a fair while back.....I replied and he posted into this thread. Sorry if there was confusion.....

He was asking about a brass bushing that was discussed in the SE Asia thread.....the link went missing.

I found the site....the bushing is from R Magic and it's an RX-7 item. Should fit on the 8 though?

Not too sure if it'd do much to make the shift smoother though. Pics below. The shifter with the plastic bushing is the MS Shortshifter.....

Taka...I've done 300k's now. The custard is feeling a bit thicker! The shifts do engage with a smoother feel now.....

Regards, Gomez.

Hi.

Was intending to to buy some of the mt90 and 75w90 and wanted a real opinion.

The American guys seem to be optimistic about everything that goes on the car.

So I thought you could help gomez....

Is this stuff useful for 120 bucks.

Bang for your buck?

Cheers.

I thought you only need 2 bottles of MT90. That is only $60 for the transmission.

Changing the MT oil is useful since there are too much crap in there when I changed mine recently. The new stuff are smoother initially but now it is back to the old self. only slight improvement I will say.

Diff oil need not to be changed until it is really required... maybe sometimes this year for me, before the nationals.

Nah, I wouldn't bother. Made no discernible difference. Got all the silvery goo out, so I s'pose that was good. If you're going to go down this track, get some local oil that's a bunch cheaper.

Gomez, scuse me asking from the antipodes, but I'm interested and there aren't many people using 8s hard in Europe, seemingly...

I am certain my diff oil is getting tired generally speaking so I'm going to change it anyway, but I wanted to ask: do you use your car on the track or for VERY spirited twisties? Mine definitely starts getting snatchy at the end of a 25 min track session or after attacking one of the passes across the moorland near where I live. I wondered if Redline would fix that...

The reason I think it's getting tired is that on hot days it's generally quite snatchy on throttle changes - feels like shunt in the driveline almost but it just "feels" like the diff rather than the whole thing. Also I set fire to the grass on the Le Mans campsite.

Oh, and where's the cooler for the diff?

No....never taken the 8 to the track. There is no cooler for the diff.....other than the air rushing past .

Grass fires are from the cat not the diff. If you do a lot of tracking you can put a cooler on the diff just need to figure out how to pump it.
