Crikey, we've got ourselves into quite a state over fuel consumption again. I have buy to sell figures for the 8, because it was all logged as part of business expensing. 12.6L/100k -- Mazda didn't lie. That means an average max range of 484k. On hwy, you can get 10L/100k, but there's still no way you'll get 600k out of a tank -- the fuel pump pick up is not that good.

Another fuel consumption thread that should be closed so that people can get on with something more constructive

I've never suggested otherwise Labby.

I quite agree that we all need to be sensible on the road, especially in traffic. Driving for economy in traffic is just common sense given you can't stretch the car's legs properly anyway.

We all have different ideas of when it's right and proper to have more of a lash. Some will only do so occasionally and good on them - their perogative.

However, driving for economy ALL the time just doesn't make sense for this particular car. It works against that intention and you'd be better off with something designed to use less fuel.

Probably my fault for not being prepared to go quietly Timbo (and the occupational hazard of finding most arguments constructive ) but thanks for confirming my suspicions as to the fabled 600km tankful.

I'm heading for the door now people.

Could somebody please remind me what traffic is?

I think that was in reply to my comment, so I will say I made no mention of lying. I said they were not everyday driving habits. The reason we have this debate is because most people see the 12.1 on the sticker and think GREAT this car gets 12.1L/100km...full stop...always...no matter what I do and on the freeway!!! wow I will get heaps better, etc.

I drove from Benalla to Melbourne yesterday. A trip of 200km. I had the cruise set the whole time on 109km/h or 99km/h. I filled up in benalla and got home having done 206km. Of those 206km, I reckon 10k's at the most were non freeway k's. I used just over 3/8th of a tank but just say 3/8th. So I say that works out to be on target for 550km to the tank or 11.1L/100. As for the fuel pump pick up. We know the fuel tank size says 61L BUT does that count the inevitable over filling that most people do?. I make a wild guess here that the 61L capacity is the fuel tank minus some room for fuel expansion in the heat. And most/some people over fill. So thos that have run it down to VERY LOW may possibly have used 61 litres and possibly more? Just a thought without much thought if you get my drift.

On the track the fuel consumption sucks

I only less than 1/2 tank left from Benalla. And it last me until Rosanna, Heidelberg to fuel up.
That would have been doing 220km for 25L. I have 4L left on the tank.

Cromax - have you tested your speedometer for accuracy ?
Fair point. Are you getting at a faulty speedo or possibly tyre issues?

I am bored so I apologise for the following thinking out loud.

I am pretty sure Cromax is running OEM tyres. I vaguely recall seeing someone say that between start and end of life, an OEM potenza has a reduced diameter of 10mm (5mm tread depth reduction on top and bottom). That equates to a reduction of circumference from roughly 2072.5mm to 2041.1

OEM Diameter: 659.7mm
Worn Diameter: 649.7mm

OEM circumference: 2072.5mm (Pi*659.7)
Worn circumference: 2041.1mm (Pi*649.7)

OEM travels: 482.5 revolutions per km (1000/2.0725)
Worn OEM travels: 984.83 meters for each km on the speedo (2.0411*482.5)

This is a reduction of 15.17 meters (1000-984.3) over each km traveled. Over 600km, 15.7m/km equates to a reduction of actual distance by roughly 9.5km (.0157*600).

Sound right?

Preacious! Just saw it as something in reply to what I had said, hence the "I think" part, so replied!

Yes I was thinking tyres - can't see any other explanation unless he was going downhill with a 100km/hr tailwind at a steady 100km/hr in 6th without one stop .
THEN i would believe it

Yes, but a very intelligent minority.

I didn't think you were being precious either. Maybe Timbo's pissed off that we're finally prepared to talk about it. Huh, big fella?

Just kidding mate.

Not much else to talk about in here of late anyways.

We need a revised model to play with.

A revised model? Ha!...sorry to say this, but you guys are hanging on to Mazda's last RE powered car. It has sold poorly and (undeservedly) earned a reputation as unreliable and a guzzler of fuel /drinker of oil. Discuss

(yes, I know, I am a weak-willed person who has bought an underpowered shopping trolley and probably never was properly inculcated into the religion of rotor.....now, play the ball )

Don't care because I'll be moving on myself when finances allow...unless you're wrong and a revised model that is actually an improvement is released.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out you're correct (given the wider environmental issues) but as others have noted previously, news of the rotary's death has been grossly exaggerated in the past and it's still kicking.

We'll see.

I generally get 300-350 per tank, however, going way bush I pushed the tank to just over 420 way west of Horsham... It took quite a bit to get back to Horsham, in the end it was a total of 520km... I am sure I had only about 3 drops left but I made it at least...
