AU Steering wheel rattle identified and fixed

I have endured a nasty rattle that appeared to be coming from either the steering wheel or dashboard. it only occurred at speeds over 80kph on rough roads. It was obviously occurring with some resonance and sounded like a loose screw or loose wiring. Most rattles I put up with, but i was more concerned in this case as it may be related to the steering column/airbag and hence safety was playing on my mind.

After three separate occasions at Mazda, they found it today. It was the "clock spring" within the airbag itself. They noticed play with various plastic components.

Hope this helps other members.

Good to see you have had rattle rectified...

AH!! the Clock Spring....

The Clock Spring is actually separate to the Steering Wheel Air Bag and is a device which is for all of your Steering Wheel Electrical Switches to operated and maintain power supply while the Steering Wheel is being turned...it also includes Air Bag, Cruise Control, Audio/Stereo Switches 12volt supply etc.

Can a bad clock spring also effect the power steering?
