Subaru issues turbo STOP Sale!

Found this at my old haunting grounds....

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...php?p=21791728

Pretty serious stuff.

FROM: Subaru of America, Inc.
DEPARTMENT: Service Department
DATE: 04/04/2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

APRIL 4, 2008
IMMEDIATE STOP SALE ORDER
ALL SUBARU DEALERS

We regret to inform you that we must place an immediate stop sale order on all of the 2008/2009 Subaru Impreza and Forester vehicles equipped with a 2.5L Turbo Engine produced with the beginning chassis number and later as shown below.
Model Starting Chassis Number Production Date

Forester 701045 2008/01/08
Impreza 523363 (SEDAN)/825183 (HATCH)2008/01/08

The reason for this immediate Quality Assurance action is that there have been several reports of “Engine Knocking Noise” from other markets on vehicles produced after the production dates listed.

Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units.

In the interest of preventing any possibility of failures for our customers, we have chosen to isolate any potentially affected vehicles by ceasing sales of the potentially affected units until the root cause and correction can be identified.

All the other displacement engines and the 2.5L Natural Aspirated Engine are excluded from this action.

Your region/distributor will be contacting you with a detailed list of affected vehicles assigned to your dealership. However, dealer trades cannot be tracked so please be aware of the affected VIN range.

If you have a vehicle in inventory that falls into the affected vehicle range, please ensure that your sales and service staff are immediately notified that the unit is un-saleable until further notice from SOA or your region/distributor.

If any of those vehicles has an unusual engine noise, please notify the SOA Technical Helpline immediately with all of the details and submit an E-QMR.

Should a customer bring an affected vehicle into your service department for an unusual engine noise, please immediately arrange that they are given the use of a clean SSLP vehicle and notify the Technical Helpline and submit an E-QMR.

You will be contacted shortly thereafter on how to proceed.

We are still investigating whether any of the SIA produced Legacy Outback turbo vehicles are affected. If any action is needed on the SIA vehicles, you will be notified early next week.

Probably because we wish Mazda had done this on several issues with the Renesis?

Mazda treated me like a God, they got me a new tranny out of warranty for free. I think they take your car seriously.

mazda seems to do right by us. usually problems are the result of crappy local dealers.

yup, living right in the middle of two mazda dealers, there is a big difference between the two. the one i used to go to (fremont mazda) was garbage while the one i go to now (hayward mazda), is a great dealership that tries to help the owners out.

^same situation with me, there are two dealers, one is good and the other is bad supposedly. Being 18 they showed me a lot of respect, it was nice.

The 08 STI have the same crappy factory tune as the 07s. They're supposed to be dogs below 4000RPM. The Cobb AP fixes this and smooths everything out. The problem is Subaru should have fixed the factory tune. They actually did offer a reflash for the 07s from what I remember, but it didn't fix the problem.

Also, the key to getting the most out of the new STI is to set the SI dial to Sport Sharp and set the center diff to "-". That'll get it to behave like the older STIs, only now with a double wishbone rear.

I was almost scared when I went to the dealer here in Santa Clara. I set up an appointment to meet the fllet sales guy and when I showed up, he just tossed me the keys to a prepped RX-8 and told me to come back in 10 or 15 minutes. No questions, didn't have to show my driver's license, nothing, just gave me the keys.

Kinda makes me wonder what kind of vicious test drive my car has been through before I bought it. But then again, try and get that kind of trust with an STI or Evo, especially at the age of 18... aint gonna happen.

Subaru doesn't make a sports car. If they did, I'd probably own one.

Haha. I know i'd sure as hell LOVE to have a Subaru for the winter season. Those things are beasts in the snow. (Way better than my '94 Civic winter-beater) lol

I definitely prefer my RX8 over any of the Subie line-up though lol

Hey tragicallyhip,

Im in the same boat as you. I own a RX-8 yet work for a Subaru/Saab/Cadillac/Porsche dealer. The announcement was a BIG surprise for all of us, and yes this dose affect US cars. In fact I had a STI customer I sold to 2 weeks ago send me an email regarding this. Unfortunatly at this point Subaru has not given us any further information regarding what to do or what specifically is causing the problems.
