View Full Version : greddy turbo and mpg tips?
LiL BenNy 05-18-2007, 10:40 AM first off im gonna get flamed for this but oh well..
just curious for the turbo guys, what mpg are you getting? obviously i knew i wasnt gonna get good mpg from the start but i wasnt expecting it to be this bad.. and i was wondering if its my car, my driving habit or is it just common for mpg to be that bad... lol
another question, when im daily driving what are some tips to get better mpg besides staying out of boost? when i cruise at higher RPMS my a/f is higher therefore i wouldnt that conserver more gas? so should i cruise at 4Kish with a/f about 16 rather then at 3kish with a/f at 12-13ish?
any other tips or mods to increasempg would be greatly appriciated too
maxxdamigz 05-18-2007, 03:10 PM Your MPG is probably comprised 60% in your tuning and 40% in your right foot. If you get on it, you will burn gas faster. That is basically the essence of more power (queue Tim Allen grunt). However, outside of boost, you should be able to lean the car out to near stock MPG. What kind of numbers are you looking at? City driving mpg will probably be really crappy as there is a lot of stop and go, and with that a lot of acceleration/opportunities to go into boost. If you kill 100 miles on the highway just cruising, your MPG should be near what it used to be if it's tuned well.

Don't have a turbo 8, my turbo RX-7s both were around 15mpg.
unreal89 05-18-2007, 04:16 PM I'm at 180 miles with 1/8th of a tank left. So I'm getting 200ish miles to the tank. I have no idea how to convert it to mpg.

what psi are you runing? what other supporting mods doy ou have? is that highway or cirty?
Could also get a boost controller. Set it real low for tooling around, and when you want to get on it, bump it back up.
Clavius 05-19-2007, 05:13 PM Benny if it will make you feel better I'm still getting 8mpg tanks and lately some 13mpg tanks :) and I'm still stock :banghead:
Brettus 05-19-2007, 05:27 PM Stock the 8 runs at about 14.5 AFR at cruise speeds 3-4k . Can't see why a turbo should be tuned to run richer at cruise but I wouldn't really know - perhaps MM could chime in .
mysql101 05-19-2007, 05:31 PM I run 15-16 at very light throttle on the highway... mostly because of this mod which increased airflow a bit:

some people also tune it to run that lean at highway, though I can't say that I baby it enough to see much reduction in burnt fuel.
If you have a cat, I wouldn't recommend this, since your EGTs are going to go up.
unreal89 05-19-2007, 06:34 PM I run the stock 6 psi.
MazdaManiac 05-20-2007, 02:13 AM My MPG was the same before and after FI and the same on 3 different motors.
Just accept it and get on with your life.
mysql101 05-20-2007, 07:07 AM same here.. I got about 15 before and after. Though I could get up to 18 if I granny it.
stickmantijuana 05-20-2007, 08:51 AM local... i liked to blow the BOV everytime i shifted, so it was really bad... say 130-140miles/tank.
on highways, i got upto 200miles.
LiL BenNy 05-20-2007, 12:00 PM yeah im accepting the fact that i get shit mpg but i was basically looking for tips how to granny it.. cuz people say dont rev as high but when i drive when i cruise at 4k i get higher a/f vs lower rpms i get lower a/f
maxxdamigz 05-20-2007, 12:29 PM That's your tune. If you change your tune, you can get the same A/F rate at 3k rpms that you get at 5k rpms. Your a/f at any time is dependent on how much fuel you have programmed in for that load/boost/rpm.
unreal89 05-23-2007, 09:13 AM I just got 36 miles out of a 1/4 tank... yikes
MazdaManiac 05-23-2007, 01:15 PM When I really go right-foot crazy, I end up in the 120-per-tank range. That is 8 MPG.
I can live with that.
batmobile-rx8 05-31-2007, 06:18 PM I usually get about 19 mpg, or 240 miles a tank. greddy turbo kit running at 7 psi. I thought that was bad but I feel better now :)
mysql101 05-31-2007, 06:31 PM we seem to get 4-6 mpg during accelerating (depending on throttle position), so 8 mpg means you're using your left foot a lot.
