When I had bad engines, I got crappy mileage. This weekend I got 23.5 mpg. 300 miles before the red light came on. That was at speeds from 60-75 mph. And a little bit of rapid acceleration. The second tank was 278 miles with corresponding higher speeds.

Did you replace the engine? I'm just going to go for a full tune up and see what turns up..
I don't rent, but if i could get a few more mpg, that'd be.... awesome

Yeah, something isn't right there. Even the 4-speed A/T has higher gearing in top gear than the M/T, so it should get at least the same mileage as others are reporting.

Tell me about it.. My brother in law knows a guy at Subaru that could tune up my car, because it seems to be in dire need of one soon. I've already driven 14-18 miles so far and its gone down about 1/8 a tank.. the dial is between the full point and the 3/4 point, and it was not so decent city driving.. but i still think it shouldnt go down that fast after seeing what others have reported.. i drafted my friend in his 73 blazer on the highway going about 55-65, for his truck is geared lower for offroad use, and even at one point we were drafting a tanker.. about the 50 miles we drove, i was already down to 3/4 from a full tank, i kid you not.

so my mpg report is 12 city and 15 hwy

Lowest on my trip was 13.99, and was tight and curvey sections of PCH that I had a blast pounding along.

12 tanks over 20mpg, 8 tanks over 22.

Gas Mileage:
If you are considering, or have purchased, an 8, you will likely have one of 3 opinions on gas mileage:
1) I am buying a sports car, or won't be driving this regularly, so I really don't care about mileage
2) I care a bit about mileage, but I think what I get is fairly reasonable
3) WTF, I am getting terrible mileage, these car's suck! All RX-8's are gas guzzlers.

If you have the first or second opinion, then congratulations and join the club. If you have the 3rd, then keep it to yourself, we aren't interested in listening to it. Gas mileage has been discussed, killed, resurrected, killed again, reincarnated, burned alive at the stake, beheaded, cremated, and buried.

The reality is, a healthy RX-8 will get 17-18mpg city, 22+mpg highway. But 'healthy' means completely healthy: healthy coils, wires, plugs, O2 sensors, carbon free engine, good compression, healthy cat (or no cat), good transmission/diff fluid. Let even one of these slide, and your mileage WILL drop, and it will drop fast. If you believe that RX-8s simply can not get this mileage because you have never seen it, then there is only 1 person to blame, and that is YOU. If you don't get this mileage, then there is something wrong with one of the above points. Or with your foot. Your right foot can make the mileage drop quite a bit as well. And I don't mean granny driving is the solution to good mileage. Smoothness counts for far more than actual speed..

People also tend to point at it being a 1.3L engine, and assume that a 240/238/232 hp rotary "2-stroke" engine is as efficient as a 1.3L 4-stroke piston engine (which is probably in the 70-90hp range). This simply is NOT the case.

So if you can't get this mileage, start poking around for what is wrong.

RI, it seems the mileage went up as the engine got cleaned out and the PCM learned that you were expressway driving.

Na, it went up when I stopped cruising at arrestable speeds, got ticketed shortly after, then cruised at 5 over.

150 is about the aerodynamic top speed of the 6 MT. The auto is electronically limited to 125.

I don't want to post the speed I hit Whole lots of nothing in northern Nevada. Roads like this:

In the summer, I hit 17mpg very consisitently. My commute is 5 miles of backroads at 60-70 mph with 3 stops, 12 miles of interstate at 78mph, and 3 miles of city traffic for a total trip of 19.5 miles. I have new plugs/wires, always fillup with 93 octane with 4oz of premix, and did a seafoam cleaning at the beginning of the year.

I live in San Jose, CA and get around 25 highway 18-19 city.

City Driving - Dont brake too much, dont rev too hard at the lights, when your on hills use your momentum, take your time going places (no matter how hard you try to be efficient in a city your 8 is never gonna get good mpg), change gears at 4k rpm(sometimes 5-6).

Highway Driving - Avoid traffic, dont get caught behind cars, dont brake too much, i drive around 75-85 on the highway , 5th gear till 70mph, then switch to 6th at 70+.

helpful tips for fuel efficiency - aside from getting a more efficient car, if you use your 8 as a daily driver like i do, limit your trips, make them worth it, do a lot of rolling and do your best to avoid braking like changing lanes often without gas-ing. I still fill up once a week though, sometimes twice a week and other times once a week and a half. keep your revs at 4k and you'll get the most efficient mileage possible with the best amount of pull. ~thats my experience anyway~
