rx-8 gas mileage
 

i been searching all over the forum and didnt really find a satisfied answer of the MPG question.

feels like the best mileage people get from their 8 is 21MPG and that is driving like grandma. never rev over 3.5k RPM. and mostly freeway. so i want to know what are the avg gas mileage you folks are getting.

but please include when do you shift, and what is the MPH while you cruise on the freeway. because driving at 60MPH and 80MPH makes a big difference.

80MPH RPM is at 4k and 60MPH is at 3k

For EX my self.

19 MPG avg
shift under 4k
cursing at 70 on freeway.


i did 115 miles on the first half tank

i got 336 on time on a tank

i average 240/tank, about 18mpg and regularly shift between 5-6krpms

Don't base your mileage on the gas gauge because it's very non linear.

I've been tracking my mileage for two years now. The two biggest influences on your mileage outside of driving style are ambient temperature and the number of warm-ups per tank. Long highway trips in the summer give the best mileage while multiple short trips in the winter give the worst.
Driving style and elimination of short trips are the easiest improvements.
Use engine braking to take advantage of fuel cut-off. Idle wastes gas. Anticipate lights to keep the car rolling. Accelerate gently but remember to redline it once per trip when it's warmed up.

Best mileage - 10 liters per 100 km.
Worst mileage - 15 liters/100km

i get 19, 20 no matter what ,shifting at 4k,6k,10k, pretty cool.

where you live makes a difference too actually -

I have an 2005 AT and drive with a fair amount of sanity (mostly go with the flow of traffic)

I check my mileage every tank and always reset my trip odometer when i get gas

I got 19-21 nearly every tank (except for trips) for 2 years when i lived in Nashville TN

and since i've lived here near LA I get 17-19.. i blame the poor air quality, lower octane fuel (91 instead of 93) and faster interstate speeds and more stop and go traffic

the reason why i asked about the is because there really wasn't any answer to it. if you type MPG, gas mileage, or miles per gallon on any part of the forum it gives you very little thread to read about. and most of them are from few years ago. rx8club is pretty dead compare to other forums that i belong to. when i try to look for anything on the forum, all the answer are on some stone age thread. and when people bring one question back to the date, they get flamed instead of getting the answers they want to know. we all know there is a search button, but do they always give you what exactly you looking for? this is a new forum, and many of the people here are still new, so just answer the question and walk on, i would really appreciated.

and here is something might be helpful when you filling up the gas, i got it for my subaru forum. most of you might know some part already.

Here are some tricks to help you get your money's worth:

1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature
is still cool. Remember that all service stations have their storage
tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser
the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you're
filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon
is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity
and temperature of the fuel (gasoline,diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other
petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is
temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallon gage is actually
the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for
businesses, but service stations don't have temperature compensation
at their pumps.

2. If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to
buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being
stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring
that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car's t ank.

3. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the
more gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline
evaporates rapidly, especially when it's warm. (Gasoline storage tanks
have an internal floating 'roof'membrane to act as a barrier between
the gas and the atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.)

4. If you look at the trigger you'll see that it has three delivery settings:
slow, medium and high. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger
of the nozzle to the high setting. You should be pumping at the slow setting,
thereby minimizing vapors created while you are pumping.
Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act as a return path
for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered. If you are
pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains more vapor,
which is being sucked back into the underground tank, so you're getting
less gas for your money. Hope this will help ease your 'pain at the pump'

the truth of the matter is these cars do not get good gas mileage no matter what so why worry. i got 300 miles on a tank all freeway doing about 75 (obviously there was no shifting)
i am currently getting 200 mile to a tank and i drive 50/50 freeway/surface streets. speedlimit on the street is between 35-50 and freeway is 75. i shift at 3500 to 4500 on average but when i feel in the food it is more like 7000 (especiily since i have a new exhaust) i havent seen any change in MPG when i have fun every now and then.

but why dos it matter again? most sports cars do not get good MPG's.

dead what forums have you been to, there is quite a bit of activity here. if the gas thread you speak of are old, that is because it is common knowledge now about the RX8 and MPG, i knew this before i bought the car. why dont you help mazda persue the rotary engine. i would say they have done a darn good job being the only manufacture in the industry doing so.

Honestly - If MPG is that big of a factor - get a new car.

im on my350z and i-club and i don't think i have to explain anymore. i am a active forum member on forums that i like. i have 2000+ post count on the Z forum and 1500ish on i-club. i would think that this forum would be as fun as the others, but i guess not.

and you asked why bother so much? well answer is because i want to see how can i get better mileage. if you going to ask, "O if you want better mileage, get a honda!" i don't need that kind of answers, even hummer forums talk about how to get better gas mileage! i don't see they tell each other to buy a honda?!

where in the thread did i say MPG is a big factor that i can't deal with?

So you are comparing a forum for the RX vs. the Z? Considering the z sells about 3 cars per every RX. . . my guess is their forum is about 3 times bigger. . . .just a guess


And do not take offense to any this, dont let people get to you like that. You must understand that if you searched for "MPG" in TITLES ONLY there are 5 pages of results. And the term "Mileage" returns 6 pages of results.

people get tired of hearing the same old sheet. You are not the first person to be flamed for this, and i fear not the last either.

oh and you have to take in the fact the sheer number of Z's sold compared to 8's and how long imprenza's have been made. this is a smaller market. combine this with the 7 forums and we tripple.

I'm lucky to if I can get 18 MPG.

But, as statted above. I didn't buy an RX-8 for the gas milage.

you guys are right, rx8 is new that is why new people joining all the time.

the only reason why i started this thread is because i want to know the MPG people get combine with their driving style.

i have read from the old posts and found out that its around 21. but how do they get 21MPG? freeway driving? 91 octane? early shifting? its all part of the factors. i just want to know more about it, because i am new to this car and the whole rotary. all i want is to know more about it. every little detail about it. do you guys really have to flame people for doing this?

and i didnt buy rx-8 for mileage also, i got it because i want a good handling car. my wrx has 234whp/253wtq is much faster than the 8, so if i want a fast car i wouldn't buy the 8 right? i like the 8, and the down side to it is the mileage, so i just want to know how can i improve a little. that is all, take it easy guys. just share your answers and tell us how you did it.

Try premixing at 200:1 . A lot of us have seen better mileage with this .....

It seems 2 RX's that came off the assembly line consecutively can differ in mileage by 5mpg.

This leads me to believe that these cars DO have a soul . . . . so I treat mine VERY nice just in case.
