I'm not sure what it is - apparently it would need to be cleared in some case where there was a problem... The TSB would probably explain more:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ocs/01-007.htm

The point here is, though, that it's a very easy way to see if you're at the "L" version of the PCM code or not. If you perform the procedure and the oil gauge sweeps, you know you're at least at version L, if not - then you are at some prior revision.

I verified this tonight when I got home from the recall updates. Prior to taking it in, the 20 brake presses would give no incation anything had happened, after getting it back the oil pressure gauge does it's sweep as described in the TSB.

Well I just checked on mazdausa.com owner's page and saw that my 8 is subject to the passenger airbag recall.

That's the good part; I've got a reason to go to the dealership and mention my lousy gas mileage while taking care of the recall.

Haven't received the recall notice though.

Just got my car L flashed, along with the two recalls.
When I asked for a L flash, they said my vin was not in the range, which was true, but I just asked them to do it. And they did it, and I confirmed with the 20 brake pedals.

The weird thing is, I also asked on them to check out possible flooding. There are quite some times that my car felt like it almost flooded, even after the car is fully warmed up. I checked on the invoice on what they did, and they actually replaced my battery and said my battery was bad?! Anyone else had dealer replacing ur battery? I would have thought they would change my spark plugs or something...

I just got my recall notice about the airbags, should I ask them to do the L flash also? And this may sound stupid, but what does it mean to confirm with 20 brake pedals? also has anyone noticed any differences after the flash?

This morning I tried the "20 brake" test. No movement with my oil needle. I guess that's the good thing about all of this - that's more proof that I need the latest and greated "L" calibration.

I really hope my MPG will improve.

And did your mileage change?

Some times more information (like telling them "it's the L reflash which has different fuel maps in it") will generate the opposite effect of what you want.

BTW, does any of this affect the way the car drives? Less powerfully, or no change.

I just got off the phone with Santa Monica Mazda.

Service does not know about any "type" of bulletin regarding fuel mileage. However, David (serivce rep) was helpful and said the master mechanic will take a look at my 8 regarding the gas mileage. I'll also be there for the airbag recall.

I'm dropping the car off on Monday, 3/15. The service is to be performed on Tuesday.

*Fingers crossed*

Exclamation WTF ?!

WTF?!

I'm convinced: my car is possessed and can hear me when I talk about it.

This afternoon I filled up with gas. I knew I had a bit more miles than my previous fill but after all is said and done, I averaged 17.18 mpg. Huh? After several 13.0 mpg averages, this is almost unbelievable. That's the best average I've had in the 1,400 miles with my 8.

I’ve got some driving to do this weekend (150+ miles) so if this next tank fill averages around 17 mpg, I don’t know whether I’ll say anything more about my gas mileage to the dealership this Monday.

I don't want to ruin these numbers with any type of re-flash.

revraz:
I've only driven 50 miles since the service, so I don't know if there's a change in mileage yet.

I have noticed smoother accelleration across the rev range, with any little dips or surges gone. Hard to say if it's faster or slower since I had the CZ mod on it until yesterday - it will stay off until CZ updates it for the newer maps in the ECU.

Once I've done a fillup and calc'd a mileage figure I'll let you know. Previously I was a pretty steady 17mpg, getting up to 20-21 only with 100% freeway driving.

Simon.
