has everyone read the porting thread?

just in case you guys don't check the hp section:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...811#post670811

a very condensed version:

not much on the intake, just a little backfilling and extension on the primary ports. ports were not opened early.

very close to stock timing on aux ports, i just radiused the edges. all runners were deburred and polished.

exhaust port timing was opened a little early, but nothing too severe. most of the work was done in the runners.

power gain was just under 9% on a completely stock car (other than the porting), and the motor had less than 100 miles on it, so it wasn't even broken in yet.

tuning:
LOTS more power could come through tuning, as the afr dropped from 12.1-12.2 all the way down to 11.8!! i guess the porting threw off the reading from the maf sensor. with identical afr's, look for power gains to be in the 10-11% range.

as you can see, there wasn't anything major done to the port timing or shapes. there's room to improve. fuel economy has actually IMPROVED with the porting!!

cool beans!

no difference in oil consumption, and the first one i got done in 2 weeks. would have been sooner, but i had to work my other job 2 days and 1 more day waiting for the clutch.
if i don't have anything else to do, i can probably get it done in about 6-8 days, but i'd like 2 weeks to give myself a cusion in case anything comes up.

You said read the thread, not understood it, right?
I'm going to have to wait, as there's a possibility this may void my warranty.

Seriously, keep up the good work. It's good to see what this engine is capable of.

it's not a possibility of voiding the warranty, it's guranteed!

but what's funny is it may actually help extend engine life in certain cases.

Then the next question is why didn't Mazda do this in the first place? If the technique you're using is very similar to older rotaries, why wouldn't Mazda look at some reliably built, ported rotaries and learn from them? I know some people here would love to help out.

For a small fee of course.

mazda has their reasons for doing things the way they do. i think a lot of it has to do with what's easiest to mass manufacture.

DING DING DING........ yes car manafactures have to find a way to get as much power as they can out of something they can make 40 million of. and they have to pass smog laws to.

its hard for them to make sure 40 million engine plates have "smooth" runners, its just not possable for them. but thats cool, its what makes the "normal" rx-8's and the built RX-8's differant.

I am sure you agree with me on that one Guitar!

by the way hows it going? you coming to our next meet right?

well, mazda could have easily done some things to improve power without hurting emissions or reliability. i'm not sure what they were thinking when they designed the exhaust ports. ask them and lemme know what they say

with this porting style, the engine flows better, gets better fuel economy, increased power, obviously, and the side seals should last longer due to the radiused closing edge on the ports--especially that funky nub on the secondary ports where they're unsupported.

we haven't done a smog test yet, but emissions shouldnt' be affected by any noticable degree.
