Excuse him... :p Thanks for the heads up on the autox stuff. I wasn't trying for a canyon run, but more like a canyon cruise.
My excuse for the auto x stuff, I just can't afford it. Between tires, gas and the fees, it can add up pretty quick. I'll wait til mazda has another Zoom-Zoom event.

You guys are a friendly bunch, just wanting to see you coming out driving the RX-8 in a safe manner and not ending up in a valley, that's all.

As for autox expense, yes, the tires do get more wear than general street driving. There is also annual SCCA membership fee ($85) and event entrance fee ($35). First Gear membership ($45) is offered to age 24 and under, a great bargain for you kids (j/k). You can try AAS at http://www.americanauto-x.com/ for no membership requirement, $40/event.
I'm guilty myself for driving spiritedly in the woods sometimes. Enjoy the RX-8 on your canyon cruise and show up at SFR autox to check out the action (free).

For me it's not the money associated with autocrossing that I'm worried about, but rather the difference in feeling. I can pull over on a canyon road and just sit there and watch the scenery. It's hard to just sit there and watch a parking lot.
I should be at the meet this Friday, but I know I've been flaky lately so I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I've switched back to my commuting/long trip stock wheels and tires.

Great to hear you're back Niel...your 8 is hotness and BTW didn't mazda used to call their events Rev it up before it became zoom zoom live?

Rev It Up, the namesake, is owned by Automotive Marketing Consultants Inc. Mazda ran Rev It Up, in partnership with AMCI in '03/'04, and went on doing its own Zoom-Zoom-Live in '05 with the introduction of NC Miata, followed by CX-7 in '06. Chevrolet took up RIU in Mazda's absence.

That wasn't a threadjack for two reasons:
1. The thread subject is "bay area chat thread". That's a pretty wide range of topics that can be discussed within a single geographic region.
2. Recent posts were about driving (presumably fast) on twisty roads. Autocross is a safer and faster version of that.

Another twist to the whole autocross thing: driving in the autocross costs money. Simply showing up, meeting other drivers and their cars, and riding as a passenger with them does not.
The friday meets are considered fun as social events where people can get together, check out each other's cars, and chat. You can do the same thing at an autocross with the added bonus of checking out other modified cars, watching people drive the course and even getting rides. Ever wanted to feel what it's like to sit in a highly modified Porsche GT2 at speed? You can do that for free at an autocross.
So why not have an RX-8 meet at an autocross event? There's plenty of parking space and if you wanted to have all the RX-8s parked together that's easy to accomplish.

I thought it was threadjacking because I wasn't aware that he had been to a meet before. I read the post and what I saw was, "Hey come pay money and do this." It looked like a plug to me.
Also, I'm not much for legality. I'd rather just go to a windy road and drive it. I don't have to worry about large crowds and an autocross to me is an all day event in which I rarely have entire free days even on weekends.
