Hey everyone! Just got my RX-8 and I am here in Walnut Creek.

I have a question for you guys. I have been searching the web for upgrades that are smog legal aka "have a CARB sticker" for the RX-8. Maybe I am dreamin, but I work at Dinan the tuner for BMW's and we have a lot of products that are smog legal. I was automatically assuming there would be a tuner out there doing the same. I did find Shane Racing out of Brentwood, CA. They said a lot of people run their stuff and pass without the CARB certification. The only thing that irks me is there is no software for their products. I am assuming that when the flow characteristics are changed the software must be updated, at least that is what we do at Dinan for the BMW's.
If this has been discussed before...sorry I searched for about 10 minutes before posting this.

if you are looking for that level of sophistication you should have bought a BMW. There is some decent after market stuff for tuning, but adjusting the stock program in the Mazda pcm/ecu doesn't exist as far as I know

I knew there would be one person who would say something like this.....

Anyone else have a suggestion?

I was thinking that due to the rarity of the RX-8 compared with other vehicles would make is not very profitable to spend the time and money for CARB approved performance upgrades. This is why I can't find anything.

The AEM and Mazdaspeed CAI which are the same, are CARB approved. As far as I know, nothing else is. I looked at the CARB website a year or so back and there was nothing else for the RX-8.

Saves me some money I guess

I stand corrected.. and going through the CARB website there is even 1 more air intake that I never heard about. I guess there might be more items out there, I just wished you could search by car make and model.

I'm thinking about it, I've done NASCAR, IRL, and NHRA at sonoma. I need to cross off drifting on my checklist.

CA CARB approved stuff

Thanks for the info! I will look into all three of those.

I also believe any form of CAT back system should be ok too. I have never been popped at a smog test for putting some high flow mufflers!

Cool Upgrades I purchased

So I used my connections in the performance world, asked a lot of questions, and did a lot of research over the past week. I came up with the following upgrades and they are on the way.

*Free Flow Exaust (racing beat)

AEM Cold Air Intake System
This product fits the following::
application_note: All
engine_type: 1.3L R2 F/I
color: Gunmetal Gray

Ralco RZ Performance Pulleys
This product fits the following::
application_note: Renesis RWD Auto,Manual FE3S 13B-MSP
engine_type: 1.3L
color: Polished

I will start with this stuff and see if there is any gain to be had. If not I think the GREDDY Turbo Kit on www.ultrarev.com might have a CARB sticker (says some applications). However, I really don't want to spend that kind of money or time tuning the car. I have also been looking at stickier tires and I think I might try out either the Dunlop Star tires on Tire Rack or Hancook extreme summer.

On another note: I am getting the wheels refinished with a black base and blue/red peral clear finish. Should look bad!

We'll be parking close to Starbucks.
