I don't know we are a stuffy bunch.

But if you twist our arms, we might let you join us. But keep an eye on that engine. There are a few members of RCCAZ that are thinking of a swap.

Oh, and you have to confess to all of the problems the Corvette has been causing you!!

I don't want to speak for everyone, but I would love to meet you and check your car out.

A BAD DAY IN CHANDLER

Cruisin along in 4th gear, low rpm when all of sudden a terrible racket begins, lots of lights on the dash and the engine dies. Car towed to dealers - will talk to them on Monday. Anyone ever hear of something like this - any guesses? BTW, I am at less than 12k miles and passed the engine recall test which I hear is not the best test.

Wow. The Renesis seldom "grenades". It just goes out with a whimper.
Especially at a low-RPM, low-load cruise.
Perhaps you just lost a belt?

I am still waiting for the final analysis - they are completing tests? Anyway I am told that I should know by tomorrow if Mazda is going to authorize an engine replacement

Could be some type of bearing seizure, but again... my first reaction was the same as MM....it definitely sounds like one or multiple belts. Weird. It the dealer is looking into it this at this depth, it's probably pretty serious. Where did you take it??

Wow that's sounds strange. As was asked ,, where did you take it to be repaired?
I hope as you were in Chandler, that they took it to Berge. Rotaries generally don't make any noise when they fail internally. They just sputter to a halt quietly.

Waiting to see if Mazda authorizes a new engine. My car is at Earnhardt and I can only hope my experience is far better than Easy's. They have done other work - several visors and my oil changes without issue. Anyway, Scott and Brandon are the mechanics and I said I would like to speak directly with one of them to understand the real issue. I am beginning to think all dealer mechanics may be more parts/engine swappers than real mechanics who would delve into the engine.

I have been searching the forum for a couple of days and agree my experience is not similar to other engine failures. I have seen a lot of opinion from MM and Chickenwafer about rotaries - very entertaining! I understand the Renesis is new technology but dang, I was able to get over 100k miles on my '73 RX3 before the seals had to be replaced so I must know a little about how to drive/maintain a rotary and that was in arid AZ too.

I am thinking that a rebuilt engine at less than 12k devalues my car quite a bit. Does anyone think I might have a case for asking Mazda for an extended warranty? If anyone has knowledge on long term reliability of the rebuilds I would love to hear.

THX!

yep, my bf is a mechanic...

...most dont take the time to diagnose properly and find the real problem because they only get paid an hour for diagnosis...no matter what (at least at the Nissan dealer I worked at). So they would rather just replace the engine that try to figure out which part of it failed.

Good luck. Ive had a total of 3 engines in my 8 now...and nope...extended warranty doesnt fly with mazda...at least for me. THey told me their parts warranty is only for 1 year and since I had a longer factory warranty left, they wouldnt extend it.

I am joining the new engine club. There were no codes to report - apparently the tow truck driver left the car on and the battery died removing all the evidence. I have no compression in the back rotor and it cannot be started. They believe the rotor broke as there was a lot of metal in the oil and it was just changed in late Dec. That would be consistent with the noises - I definitely believed the engine was coming apart!

I am going to post on discussion forum and see if anyone else had this experience.

Anyway, since it is going to be apart and my labor will be free, any upgrade suggestions that will keep me in warranty? I see a lot of nice stuff being offerred by Charles Hill but I don't think I can stay in warranty with those upgrades.

No ETA on the engine yet.

Holy CRIPES are you kidding me? WOW and no warning at all, but you did hear some 'noise' in Dec? Sheeeesh how does a rotor just go bad like that? And further, a dead battery is all it takes to remove code memory from this car? Oh my goodness sakes.

OKay....needing some suggestions!
I'm starting to get perturbed about why the paint of my rx-8 chips off so easily. I have seen other stuff on the net about other 8's, but don't remember where. What are some ways to combat this problem, and/or quick fixes for now? I have read about using the mazda touch up paint & applying it with a tooth pick, but any other things to try? I do have the mazda paint, but I'm guessin it's a year or 2 old...is that still okay? It's not just my front either, where like rocks from big trucks would hit, but also by the door.
Thx!

I've had paint chipping problems w/my 8, and with my Miata previously. We have soft paint or something. I leave mine be; I think touching up would just pock-mark it and make it worse unfortunately.

Several folks here had the 3M clear bra installed on their cars when they were new, to help those little rocks better bounce off their cars. I don't know that I'd do it this late into the game though.
