I am going to have my first oil change soon...I decided to bring it to my friend's shop to do it...but since he don't know much about the Rotary(so do I)..I am just wondering what kind or brand of engie oil you guys use?or which one is best for it?

well, if you read the owners manual, it says to use 5w20 mineral oil. if you want everyones opinion, you will find many diverse responses. if you use the handy search button located at the top menu bar of the page, you will find hundreds of different threads on this very subject. as to what i use, i use royal purple 5w20 full synthetic in the engine, royal purple 75w90 in the transmission and rear differential.

my 8 has 20k miles, and i just switched to royal purple at the last oil change. i noticed that it seems to idle a little better overall.

as i said, you will find many diverse opinions on this subject, and this is just mine. i dont believe there is any correct answer to what oil is best for the 8, as there havent been any specific studies on that by independent agencies that have been published (to my knowledge). there are members on here that have used the royal purple in their rotaries for years and years with no apparent harm, and other people here that wont use anything but what mazda specifically states to use.

Can you scan the page where it says to use mineral oil?
My manual makes no mention of synthetic or mineral oil.
Just as long as it has an SL rating and is 5w20, and API certified.

Used 5w20 conventional for about 8000kms, switched to royal purple 5w20 synthetic and I've clocked abount 44,000kms with no issues what so ever. In fact it runs smoother with synthetic at idle and FEELS like it revs faster =p

Just an observation, why would you take it to a friends shop when your local dealer will do it for $ 34.95 using the proper Mazda filter and oil? As well they will check for any outstanding recall/bulletins that have been issued.

As a matter of interest, what brand of oil do dealers in Canada use when servicing the RX-8? Here most dealers use Mazda Rotary Oil.
