Test Drive = Sweet Ride

Hi all

I drove the RX-8 today.

A little city, a little highway.

Without trying hard, was hitting 80 in the 60 zone, needed to watch the digital readout closely to keep within the speed limit. Was a bit tricky to maintain a constant speed with the digital readout, will take some getting use to.

Got 2 great oppertunities to run her fast. Hit 135 in a 70 zone, with no cars or **** in the way, just clear sailing. Would have pushed harder but there was a few vehicles parked on the shoulder up ahead, so I eased her back to 80 for the pass.

2nd oppertunity came on a divided highway. After a few km's northbound, checking for smokies, I made an about face. Parked her on the shoulder, let a few vehicles pass, and with a good clear highway I drover her hard all the way to 160km. Got there in record time and had lots of power to spare.

The tach buzzer is really not that annoying as was once thought, and I barely noticed it.

Here is the best part of it all. The speed sensitive steering was flawless. No matter what speed, the steerig felt the same at all times. Just the right power without giving you the feeling of no control. you can actually feel the road in your hands, without any jarring or vibrations. It reminded me of my 1st gen with the ball and nut assembly, except no extra play at high speeds.

I performed a few high speed lane changes in and around 100km/hr. The car remained flat and true to the road. Never at any point did I feel that I was loosing control or even nearing the edge of instability. Not sure if thats a good thing or not, but it worked for me.

The 40kph off ramp exit was perfectly handled at 70kph, and I had to slow down exiting to fit into traffic..damn.

With only a few blocks left for the test ride, I made a few quick lane changes, dodging in and out of traffic. The cars size is perfect for quick manouverability and leaving you with that uncanny feeling of "You know where every part of the car ends and begins" or was it the bulbous fenders that did that, not sure.

While parked, and the engine off, I tried the stereo, full MAX and yes the digital readout says MAX. There was not a single crackle sound from any of the 9 speakers.

The RX-8 is a very driveable, loveable, an easy to live with car. I would suggest that you get your deposits in now, because once the word is out on how SWEET of a RIDE this car is, the lineups will be endless.
