Replaced Purge Valve Solenoid...Long start after getting gas?

Hey guys, i just replaced my purge valve solenoid. Granted it was a cheapo one from Amazon but it looked the exact same as ones Ive seen online from Mazdatrix and Atkins....

Anyway, part aside, I got a small evap leak CEL and now a weird thing happens where after filling up my tank, the car takes a good 4-5 seconds to fire up. Outside of that though, car runs like a top. No idle issues, no starting issues (other than after getting gas), no hot start issues, etc.

I also hear the purge valve clicking periodically and stop. Is that normal?

The most obvious answer is to replace the solenoid again and Ive already ordered one. But where im confused is how the purge valve can effect the start up after filling up with gas? Is that even related?

Other than the code for a small evap leak, I dont have any other codes.

My question would be why did you replace the solenoid in the first place? A small evap leak can be a multitude of things. It could be a small tear in one of the evap hoses or one of the purge or vent valves slightly hanging open. The purge valve clicking is likely the valve opening and closing when commanded by the ecu. Since you picked up a cheap part, it may not operate as an oem valve would. Im not sure on the extended crank. My first thought is a vacuum leak at the purge valve causing a lean condition and vacuum leak. But a vacuum leak will typically give you a p0171 lean code. Have you looked at the fuel trims on live data on a scan tool?

i was replacing my SSV with the updated design from the S2 RX8s (i have a 2004 rx8)

and replacing my purge valve was just a "while i was in there" type of thing. i also replaced the solenoids on the upper intake manifold and the orange gaskets on the upper intake.

i have not checked the fuel trims yet. i dont have any driveavility issues other than right after i fill up. i dont have the P0171 code but i do have the P0442 (small leak) code which i understand could be anything

A stuck open purge valve will cause an extended crank after refueling and an evap leak fault. When you refuel, the air/fuel vapor in the tank are displaced by the incoming liquid fuel. Normally they are routed through the evap canister to capture fuel vapor and then to a vent. With the purge valve stuck open fuel vapor will also enter the intake during refueling and cause a 'flooded' condition. I would not recommend using amazon/parts stores for any electronic component. If you want reliability, go with the OEM part.

Glad to hear that you got it fixed!! My grandfather told me once when I was 16, "you pay cheap, you get cheap". This advice has stuck with me and it applies to many things and has been pretty reliable advice over the last 28 years. I always try to stick with a name brand and I read reviews if applicable. Sometimes you can get a cheap part and it works. Other times not so much. Typically, vehicles prefer oem or oem equivalent electrical parts to ensure proper functionality.
