CT purge solenoid valve

Ok so after playing games with the P0455 check engine light code and after replacing the gas cap and having the check engine light turn back off then come back on a week later I brought it back to the mazda guys. They checked the codes and told me there was not only the P0455 but also a catalytic converter code popping up. So he tells me in his experience he thinks it is a problem with a purge solenoid valve getting stuck open at different times. Because after doing a evap test everything checks out 100% and no leaks detected. So I'm having them go ahead and replace it. Just wanted to run this by the community and maybe someone can chime in with a similar experience. Or any thoughts at all would be great, thanks guys!

Giving a little bump to this. I'm trying to track down and squash a P0456, already tried the gas cap route. Not sure whether to try the canister or the solenoid next.

Hey there. I should have updated this myself. I did infact have them replace the purge solenoid valve and it did solve the problem. The P0455 has not come back on yet and hopefully never will (so in my case it wasn't the gas cap). It's a good possibility it is your gas cap but I couldn't say for sure. You could try replacing it with a autozone one and see if it helps. You will need 2-3 days of drive cycles before the CEL will reset itself or have autozone do it for you after you replace the cap and see if it comes back on. I know how you feel though, seeing that light come on really bothers me lol. But good luck and hope you solve it.

Not sure on where there is a tutorial on how to do it, but it's right on top and very easy to get to and is also small so I couldn't see it being hard to do yourself. Good luck.

Does anyone know where the location of the valve is? I'm gonna hopefully try and clean it, and see if that'll keep it from "sticking" open

I also got code P0443 and I replaced the gas cap and it didn't work after a month it came back. Then I cleared it again and 2 weeks later it came back, cleared it. Then 2 days ago came back and deleted again and today it came back. I guess it's just calling me to fix this already, I'm gotta try and clean it tomorrow morning and check all my connections. If not I guess I'll try replacing the Purge solenoid valve mazda part Z504-18-741A correct me if I'm worng.

Anyone else would like to share how they fixed code P0443? I can't seem to find a straight answer on how to fix this...

I have the same issue. My cel came on about a month ago it bothers me so much. The cel codes are po455 and po456. I've tried changing the gas cap but that didn't get rid of the cel and I dont want to go to the dealership so they can overcharge me for something i could do myself.

well P0456/P0455 are for leaks in the evaporative emissions system, so there can be a number of different things wrong. the gas cap is probably the most common, the purge valve is common too, but there is also all the plumbing, and the gas tank, charcoal canister, etc

you know its not the gas cap, if you feel lucky try the purge valve, but really they do a smoke test to find the leak

Sorry to rehash an old thread.

After living with this problem for a couple years, I finally manned up and replaced the purge solenoid valve.

Checking my existing purge solenoid valve for resistance between the terminals yielded ~350Kohm, whereas a new one was only ~25ohm. Powering the terminals on the new one causes it to make a clicking sound. The old one didn't make any click. I'm guessing the internal coil winding was fried.

Basically, you'll need to remove the upper intake manifold:

You have to go through this hassle because the purge solenoid is attached to the underside of the upper intake manifold. Just pull it off gently and try not to hurt the grommets. Pop in the new one and reinstall everything. Good to go.

if you have the engine idling, and its making the noise, put your hand on the SSV, if the noise stops, its the SSV, if not its something else.

Hey guys sorry to dig up this old thread but I just wanted to shed some light on the solenoid replacement. So I tried replacing the Solenoid with a cheap aftermarket one on amazon, doesn't last long until you could hear it clicking and the CEL popped back up. Pay the extra money and buy an OEM one.

You dont have to remove the upper intake manifold to replace this part, its a little bit of a pain but it can be done. All I did was Push down on the Oil filler cap a little bit (not to hard) and it gave me a little more wiggle room. Hope this helps

This advice saved me a lot of time! I had to also pull the solenoid slightly towards the front of the car while pulling down on it, but it popped right out! Little harder aligning it going back in, but a 5 minutes job none the less.
