just some pics of a 6 port engine i was hoping to save the plates from but the old owner has installed aftermarkert corner seals .
plates are now junk. checking to rotors to see if they are still in spec
compression was in the 60psi range,
wating on some hardness files to see how hard the plats still are,
from what i have read it should be over 50 HRC unless the plates have been lappted
If I've learned a thing while DIY rebuilding these engines, is that keeping to OEM parts makes life sweeter. Can't help but feel bad about all the work wasted to create side plates just for someone to "bRiDgEpOrT tHeM bRo" so that they lose power and sound terrible. Or do similar dumb things to them thinking that any aftermarket part can beat mazdas expertise in this domain. They've tried for 50 years to make it work and still failed quite badly, doubt anyone crawling up from under a rock can top them.
no it was not ported, did not even clean up the flashing inside the exhaust port.
my understanding is that tricks used on the rx7 13b engine can not be copyed on a rx8 13b, porting seals etc
apart from port matching and casting flashing removal i doint think thear is much if anythink to be gained from not using all oem
when i find some new plates it will get balanced and file finsheds seals
I didn’t think so looking at the exhaust port, but no pictures of the intake to be sure
it could be something other than the aftermarket solid side seals, but as you said; no reason not to use the factory side seals for an OE type build.
.
The atkins one-piece side seals are known for being pretty tough on the iron faces, and also not offering as good compression values as the OEM seals do.

In this case OEM are your best bet..... even in the FD world where there are numerous internal upgrades available, at least as it pertains to corner seals--- OEM are best. In particular the atkins solid corners IMO offer nothing over stock and only have the downside of accelerated iron plate wear.
