UK Well, time for a Dyno and Remap 11th December

As I'm based in the UK and North Wales, I'm limited but SilverStone Motorsport have a good rep so, going for their compression/K&N filter and remap and rolling road tune... and booked in for Tuesday 11th December... can't wait.

Details Here

Would like to see the normal power hike for deffo, nothing amazing but at least smoothing the delivery out etc especially from 8,000 rpm onwards where it keeps on power... that to me is worth the cash alone.

I'll post the pre and post dyno runs so people can see results, I know you guys love a good dyno run and graph lol.

Quick question though, I noticed that the graphs here show what I feel, a sudden drop/stutter at 4,000 rpm and 6,500rpm then picks up again... it just feels like a lull in power. What actually causes this in the engine? Aopogies if this is covered elsewhere.

I'm pretty certain the stutter is the secondary and auxiliary ports opening. Good luck at Silverstone/GroupB/Lindop/whatever they're calling themselves this week.

They seem to change their name more often than I change my oil.

Well dyno run complete and very very happy with the results, the fella testing was quite surprised and reckons I've got a solid engine compared to alot he's seen which are way down on power etc... mine's just done over 51,000 miles.

So, basically they compression test the car, rolling road dyno it before filter and then replace this with a panel K&N filter and remap the car... will post the paper report picture and curve later but makes great reading:

compression figures were:

Rotor 1: 7.5/7.6/7.7
Rotor 2: 8.0/7.9/7.9

Before fiddling, was kicking out 176.8bhp@flywheel at around 8,100rpm... after the panel replacement and remap kicking out 196.0bhp. Torque before fiddling was peaking at 133ftlbs at 5,750rpm and now peaks at 145ftlbs...

So, was it worth it? Certainly pulls considerably better than it did... and yes, he did agree with all previous debate stating Mazda were talking out their @rse when they said these cars come with 228bhp in the UK... he's never ever seen one pull over 190bhp standard even when brand new out the box.

You do realize that a panel filter and a remap won't lead to a 20hp gain, right?

That's not what my printed results infront of me and my right foot are saying...?!?! So what you're saying is, they're lying and I'm imagining the difference? And the compression results are a lie as well?

I'd like to see that dyno
VERY few engines pull over or even close to 200whp
not to mention a 20hp jump from just a tune and air filter lol

Figures are flywheel not at the wheels... so allowing for a 15% drivetrain loss, I'm thinking it's around 196@flywheel and 167@wheels.

I'll post the graphs and the report later when I get in... these guys have been tuning rotary engines for years... at the end of the day, I'm not going to argue on a forum, been there and done that, I'm just stating exactly what the report states... will post report in high res later and you guys can rip apart if you like So unless we're now saying that these guys have been lying to every RX8 owner in the UK for years... I can only go on how the car now drives (which is nicely) and the reports.

As an additional, they did say that the engine mounts could possibly need looking at and there's a small leak in the rear damper that I need to look at. Apart from that got the all clear.

Also, while I'm here, the compression results, they said were spot on, how's this range I have compare to what you guys have seen?

BTW, here's the company who performed the tune etc

ah I see, that is more believeable
still hard to believe a tune boosted you 20hp
kudos to you if it did

You should focus on rwhp, not flywheel hp unless they took the engine out and put it on an engine dyno.

There are many tricks that can make the end results different on a dyno and a 20hp bump in power with just a filter and a tune is the result of such tricks, not just tuning.
170rwhp is pretty weak for our standards anyway.

That's a solid number for a healthy stock RX-8.

Cheers fella, much appreciated and exactly my thoughts. As far as I'm concerned no RX8 ever came to UK with 228bhp (I've not seen many cars dynoed that have ever matched factory at stock in all my years of car mods)... probably 210bhp at best... and then 51k miles later, loss of power blah blah... made up it's kicking out 196bhp. However, you got any thoughts on the compression figures?

I have seen a couple of low mileage 8's pull in the 190WHP range stock but you really cannot trust dyno numbers much, numbers on a dyno can be fudged. We had a dyno event a few weeks ago and we all pulled low numbers including a new R3. Your compression looks decent and about normal from what i have seen. Do you premix?

No, don't do any premix. I basically drop my oil every 4-6k miles, new filter etc and that's about it.

you might want to google dyno dynamics shootout mode for more info

Yeah read about all the shootout modes this week before taking it in... blah blah... and really couldn't make head nor tail of it all... basically all the modes can give differing results... some higher, some lower etc as they're calibrated differently. All I'm hoping is that the pre and post runs were done on the same mode... whatever mode... mine seems to be under Shoot_2R, however, not sure if that's correct or not?!?! I'm assuming it could be 2WD and rear... or it stands for twin rotor rear? **** knows. lol.

Either way I'm hoping that all Dyno Dynamics runs around the world would be set to Shoot_2R... and therefore at least a direct comparison... and no dyno will be the same anyway I'd have thought so, it's all swings and roundabouts anyway. All you can do is use the same one everytime

Actually found this article today, quite an interesting read

Well, now upgraded the back box and also gone decat pipe, replaced all the coils, sparks and ignition leads, dropped all the oil, gear box oil and diff oil... all replaced and basically gone to town on anything, cleaning connectors and god knows what... also replaced brake pads with EBC Yellow Stuff, dropped the brake fluid and put in ATE Super Blue Racing Brake Fluid DOT 4, replaced the brake hoses with HEL steel red braided hoses...

Result, 215bhp (although hardly any difference in torque at all) it's kicking out now. Still way down on factory but hey ho... that's to be expected. Running very very sweet now, but christ removing the CAT hasn't half made the car noisy lol. Wasn't quite expecting the rumble around 3,000rpm that you now get :-)
