tranny kicks out of first when letting out clutch

so i took my 04 rx8 for a drive this morning and it worked fine after about 30-45 min later i pulled up to a stop sign put the car in first gear and started to let the clutch out and first gear grinded and kick out. tried second gear worked fine. drove a bit a slowed right down to about 10kmh put it and first and it went in fine and drove like normal but when the car is stoppedit wont go in first gear. any thoughts? do i need a new tranny? any help would be appreciated. p.s. what a great birthday present fml

ok well it could be a synchro and you actually arent getting it fully in gear even though it feels like it. could be bent shift fork.

one other thing it could be is the ball or seat at the base of the shifter. if eitehr is damaged it could cause the shifter to pop out. check the AFSS page here for a DIY on how to take the shifter off and you can check it your self http://www.axialflow.com/ss8_diy.htm

if those look fine then get the tranny fluid replaced as the next step. you never know what the previous maintenance was like if any and if they find some excessive metal down there you'll know what the next step will be...

Check your clutch pedal bracket.
