Esmeril Turbo Issue

Hey everyone,

I have my Esmeril kit installed and we are hammering out the detail for tuning. Jeff (MazdaManiac) and I have using the COBB I bought from him a few years back. Our Issue is with the car going full lean at 3k RPM.

We swapped the middle injectors for 1000cc and took those yellows and put them in place of the reds. I also installed the 300lph fuel pump that came with the kit. The car idles amazingly well, but as soon as I get to 3-3500prm it wants to shut down.

We took the fuel pump out today and checked everything, same with checking the injector setup and wiring. We just cant figure this out. I can only think that the fuel pump is our issue....

PLEASE HELP!

Do you have a factory assembly with a factory pump in it to try out? I could lend you one if you need it.

There have been reports of issues with that pump on Rx-8s...

Does it do this while free revving or just under load? Could be a lot of stuff...

Which fuel pump do you have? The walbro or the aero motive? Mine did a similar thing at 12 psi with the old walbro. Swap out with the aero motive 340 LPG pump but has not test that pump yet.

fuel pressure?
o2 sensor ok? ( open versus closed loop)?
Is Jeff remote tuning or live tuning?
Huge vacuum leak through the ssv?
If jeff is on the scene--then I certainly dont know anymore than he does.

The fuel pump should be easy to diagnose......measure the FP.......fuel pressure is fuel pressure really you either have it and it is stable...or it isn't

You sure you have the injectors hooked up properly?

Sounds to me like the PCM is in limp mode. It does the same thing when on the rev limiter.

Easy to check too, with the key on - engine off and the throttle pushed wide open look at the throttle body blade and see if it is in the wide open position

-It has been doing this since the first start of the motor. It does it both free rev and under load.

TeamRX8 & Charles R. Hill-I'll have to look at that valve, but the PCM should be ok at this point. This problem has been going on since the very first start with the kit on. I think we will try the old fuel pump, as its easier to swap out than trying to test for fuel pressure here at my shop.

Nobody should ever install a turbo kit without some type of fuel pressure indicator/alarm.

Thre are other causes for limp mode than just the OMP.

Team is right on this--it might save your engine. Since you cant watch gauges all the time, get one with a warning light and recall. Fuel systems and ignitions system are critical for FI rotary.

Update.

We swapped the fuel pump and it seemed to be running a lot better, then once it warmed up it started doing the same thing again. Out of sheer guess work, we unhooked the MAF and started it up. We only did this for a quick trial, but the engine didn't bog down and revved freely through the entire range.

With this being a blow through set up, what options do I have left? Should I try and order a new MAF? Let MM/Jeff know and have him advise me?? Maybe he will read this soon....

Thanks for any ideas.

while the car is idling tap the top of the maf sensor and see if the idle changes--if it does thats a symptom of a bad sensor.
also check the harness/wiring.
It would be strange for the sensor to go bad exactly when the kit is installed.

have you changed the plugs recently? I know when I bogged on fuel trims the result was fowled plugs. I would check them for sure. I had the same symptoms that you are when I had fowled plugs

I have a new set of colder plug, but I was waiting to break in the car a bit before I put them in.

From what MM told me, the STFT are going to 0% at the 3-4k rpm range.
