Sounds like the starter is not kicking out and grabbing the teeth on the flywheel and is just spinning .

Take out the starter and test it on the bench to see if it kicks out (hook it up to a 12v battery and terminals on starter ) . Just so happens the starters on the 8's are by far the easiest ones to remove ive ever delt with (under the car beside tranny) You can have it rebuilt or by a new upgraded one while your at it and have the extra funds .

You think you could try push/pull-start the car, if you have a manual transmission, on the road? At least to get you where you could get the part

the diy is very simple. jack up the car go in from the drivers side locate the starter next to the tranny and undo the two cables on it. one is a 10 or 12mm and the other is just a clip which is the ground wire. then undo the two bolts holding it in. possibly 14mm i believe. once theyre out it should fall right out. put in new starter and reatatch in opp order.

I got mine from autozone (had to be ordered) only about 100 bucks after you give them the old one. No complaints.

^+1 did the same thing with autozone, you could also tap the starter with a hammer and have another try to start the car. Thats how i tested my starter and when or if u push start it ur traction control light might stay on but it will go off by the next time u drive it.

I don't know how to push/pull start an automatic; but a shot in the dark, try searching "tow start" and it might link you to other threads how to do it.

The engine is not turning over - it's just the starter spining because the pinion gear has not moved forward to engage the flywheel .

So - flooding has nothing to do with it .

Sometimes tapping the body of the starter motor may help to get the pinion to move forward - SOMETIMES .
