Blown manifold???

I finally got the nitrous system up and running, heading to the dyno i got it a few times. During the second run heard a pop and there was no power but the motor kept responding.
Long story short, the plastic upper part of the manifold split in half, a GIANT vaccum leak
SO, is this a common problem with these cars?if so what do people do to safegaurd them against this?
Anyone have anything lying around they want to sell off?

Of course, i wasn't really paying attention to the a/f gauge, of course. But the motor starts up, compression is good and sounds fine so thats a good thing!

Thanks in advance guys!

55 shot. The nozzle is on the bottom of the intake piping about 3 inches from the throttle body.

what rpm did you start spraying?

Generally spray nitrous on a dyno is a bad idea. A local guy here blew up his UIM with nitrous as well.

I blew mine up. Into about 50 pieces. I did mine under load at low rpm and let off the throttle and back into the throttle. BOOM!
As far as going off at 7200 rpm did you let off and get back into it? I would suggest the BHR Throttle body spacer.
If the engine vacuum is low and your pumping nitrous and fuel down the intake, the fuel has a tendency to puddle in the UIM., And then it dribbles down into the engine with little air (vacuum) behind it. And if the throttle body is closed it has no where to go,, closed chamber,,equal BOOM!

thanks easy, that's good info to know. I'm heading down to pick up the mani tomorrow and have it on and running tomorrow evening.

The throttle body plate, it'll work with a NOS kit as opposed to a ZEX kit right?

Rotr8, great dealing with you and you have a very very nice 8.

I got the mani on and almost everything plugged up.
On the back of the manifold there is a small vaccum hose with a green and white 'check' valve in it. It attache post tb and to a small nipple on a black box underneath the mani. As a reult, i had to plug it up and was not able to attach the vaccum hose.
What does this box do?

Also, the 'silencer box' on the intake tube exploded, so i just plugged up the hole for now, is that going to cause an issue with the car?

The throttle body spacer will work with any kit but the ZEX kit has been the one we have suggested for a few reasons.

The nozzel for nitrous and fuel are placed into the spacer instead of having to drill a hole in the intake manifold or the intake.

Well there was a bunch of brown murky crap in all the runner on the intake piping. We moved the nozzle and dropped the nitrous nozzle down to a .030

I don't want to cause any excitement but I have been working on an intake manifold replacement for the 8. So far its a personal thing for my personal car but who knows.....maybe it makes it to production I don't know that there is enough demand for it to cover the initial investment it would require to produce it though.

Just throwing a rock in the pond to see the ripples

Best regards,

Chris

Actually now that I think about it,,, If you dont mind Kevin keep your cracked Mani Ill take it off your hands when you get everything resolved...

I would defintly be interested in an upgraded intake mani, i just can't see the longevity of the plastic mani holding together under extreme pressures, ask the turbo and S/C'd R32's.

I will hold onto the blown manifold, i have MOST of the pieces, well the big ones anyway.

Oil in the intake is a TSB? interesting...i will look into this.

It collected 1/2 a quart of oil, on my car, before the engine change.
