The Stig impresses F1 champ Alonso

http://eurosport.yahoo.com/14072008/13/stig-impresses-f1-champ-alonso.html

Mon 14 Jul, 09:34 AM

Former double world champion Fernando Alonso has dealt a blow to rumours he is the mysterious character known in motoring circles as 'The Stig'.
The Stig, who always wears plain white racing gear and helmet, is an anonymous and highly-skilled test driver for the BBC television motoring programme, Top Gear.
It is often speculated that Alonso is The Stig. But the rumour exited the realms of possibility during the recent British Grand Prix weekend, when The Stig actually appeared in the Silverstone paddock.
He performed some laps of the damp Northamptonshire circuit at the wheel of a two-seater Formula One car - watched on closely by none other than Alonso.
"Whoever's in that car is a seriously good driver," the 19-time Grand Prix winner is quoted as telling the Top Gear website.
"I've no idea who he is, but he's definitely ex-F1," Alonso added.
The Stig's passenger, a lottery winner, bought the ride in a charity auction for $70,000.
..............................
The comments to the article have a lot of speculation and insight to whom the Stig(s) might be.

If they rotate Stigs as rumored, then what Fernando is saying might just be cover to fuel speculation and add interest to the show.

If you read the comments after the article, someone mentions that "the Stig" is a different height in different episodes. He doesn't seem to be one person.

Impossible. Schumacher doesn't have any friends!

A Senna Now there IS an F1 Driver, IMO the best ever and not because he is no longer with us..this guy had guts and ***** of steel...what a driver!

As for the Stig, this guy is more than one person, some shows I have seen he is 10 kilo's (25 pounds or more ) heavier.

Some sources are pretty sure that the Stig is a chap called Ben Collins, you can also check out some stuff on youtube about it. Obviously there's been many guest Stig's anyway, but that's supposed to be the current one.

hate to break it to you guys but "The Stig" isn't an F1 driver. he's former rally driver Stig Blomquist.

not sure if that is correct either. from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stig

The Stig's name derives from presenter Jeremy Clarkson's days at Repton School; where, according to Clarkson, new students were always called "Stig".[1] A proposed name for the Stig was originally "The Gimp" until protests from Perry McCarthy nixed the idea.[2] There have been two official Stigs on the show, while various other Stigs have made cameo appearances for particular episodes.
