Tire Rack Street Survival School - My experience

Great Day with my son (My friends call him the Iceman) very impressed by the school and the format, so much so I volunteered to help **** cones today instead of just standing around.

Furthermore, I am also signed up to be an instructor at future Florida schools.

There is one coming to West Palm Beach soon and another in Tampa.

This is a fantastic format and I personally think every kid should take it, the earlier the better.

The improvement I saw in many of the younger kids today, the confidence, the car control, was remarkable. Plus the lessons learned were very valuable.

Upon arrival, every student received a free Tire pressure gauge, compliments of Tire Rack, then the instructors (1 for every student or 37 of each) demonstrated how to check your tire pressure. Air compressors were on hand to adjust as necessary.

I talked to this kid a little, he was having some trouble starting his car in the afternoon, he knows nothing about Rotaries. I am hoping he signs up here and starts reading before it is too late.

The Iceman received a driving instructor that I knew (and urged me to volunteer to do the same) she is a fellow Autocrosser and National Champ as well. She figured Mike knew his way around the car, so when she was supposed to be checking tries pressure, and demonstrating the smells of fluids on the car and how to identify them. We talked about how he changed the oil on his car the day before, and checked the tire pressure before we left the house. Then caught up since we had not seen each other in years.

My son after showing my friend his camber plates on his E30.

Iceman in line to do an ABS test on his E30:

This kid was interesting, it was obvious this was not his first Rodeo, after talking to him, I learned this was his 4th Street Survival, he has done a couple of Autocrosses and 2 track days at Sebring. You could tell, he threw that E21 around like a rag doll.

After Lunch, there was a Semi parked with some cars around it, this was a demonstration where the kids got to sit in the drivers seat and see what a Semi driver sees, and does not see, some of those cars around it were invisible to the driver. I think the kids had a new respect for truck drivers and also learned not to camp in the blind spots.

In the afternoon they did some more accident avoidance, skid pad practice where they learn to handle a slide, and a mini AX course to put all they learned to the test. On their 3rd run they had to send a text while driving or make a phone call. Interesting and predicable results.

I have to sift through 3 hours of video to get about 7 minutes of footage. Once compiled I will share. It was a great day, and one I urge any of you that are under 21 to take, especially if you are not Autocrossing your car.

A different take on just autocross, but it's easy to see the value this would have for young drivers. Road survival indeed. Aptly named.

This sort of thing should be mandatory before getting your drivers license in the US.

Do you know when the one in Tampa is going to be?
I'd like to try to go if possible.
