ok so lately i've noticed a 1 time clunk every time i turn right. its at any speed at all. it souds like something binding or loose. i looked underneath and all seems tight. today it did it on a few left handers which is a first. it never does it under striaght accell or deceleration. it also won't do it when not rolling if you turn wheel back and forth. so basically if i'm moving forward and making a righ hander it clunks once. it sounds like its comming from the right front in the driverseat but passenger says its from front left. ANY CLUES WOULD HELP. also its louder at low speeds it seems

Just for grins...............have you done anything to the car lately? First thing I would do is go make sure your lug nuts are tight. Probably are because no shimy while going straight, then you gotta start looking at things in the suspension area.

lugs are tight and suspension seems plenty tight.

Use a torque wrench to insure that the wheel lugs are tightened to 108 lb-ft of torque. This specification was in response to noises, especially during low speed turns.

yea but at the same time nubo factory manual calls for torgue to be i believe it was 78-95 doin it too 108 will snap the stud or strip the lug nut

Yes, you may need some grease on the bushings.

had more of a barely audible clicking to mine. torqued to 108 and it's gone.


mazda wouldn't change the specs to something that would snap/strip.

ive seen the book thats said what the torque for the lug nuts for the rx8 are gone, watch see what happens when u try n loosen ur lug nuts up when u take the wheel off..........

the tsb is out there... i have been using 108 ft lbs.. for 60 k of the 70k miles on my car.....

let me know if you understand that..

my mechanic must just use some sort of magic wand, then. nothing broke when the winter set was removed - they were at 108.

maybe you're confusing the issue. some have broken when knuckle-dragging jackholes neglect to use a torque wrench. but that's b/c of the knuckle-dragger, not the torque specs.

well ive seen a book that said torque specs were 79-87.......now if theres a tsb out on it, i havent seen it but ive always gone by what the book said....ive never had an issue.

it is OK and my dealer as well suggested a high lug torque even on my after market rims with this clunking noise way back when. In my case they got a bit happy and when it came time to remove a wheel I had broken lugs... but anyway...

I will take a stab at this issue....
Try finding a nice newly paved parking lot. Turn the wheel in any one direction... (Left or Right) and then steadily but slowly accelerate doing circles... NOT DONUTS. If you hear that clunk or feel any sort of drag then we may have found the issue.

Try turning off the DSC and then do the same thing... it probably will not occur.

Press and hold the DSC for 10 secs to completely disable the DSC (slip & Trac). Try it again... You may even spin out now, but if that clunk does not appear it is probably just the DSC doing what it thinks is its job. It is breaking your front wheel cause it thinks it will lose traction at the rate of turn you are in. that is what that clunk may very well be.

Took me weeks to figure this out when I dropped to my low profiles on 19" rims... it drove me nuts too.

Yes that too... A loose or un-greased sway!
I have RB sways and after the Dragon run (us129) I must have squished all the bushing grease out... The sway also makes a grinding kinda clunk noise and if not greased will get progressively louder and more frequent.
