I am looking to swap instrument clusters and need to make the mileage on the replacement read the same as the old cluster to prevent a discrepancy. The mileage information is stored in the cluster itself, as I have already swapped them as a test, and the cluster shows the mileage from the car it came from even when hooked to my car's PCM.

The dealer is unsure as to how this would be accomplished. Any of the more experienced minds here know?

 

Dealer is only place to do it, and you must buy new cluster from dealer. Unless you have some shady guys workin there, they wont touch a used cluster. Best method is find one close to your actual mileage.

They can be reprogrammed...you're just going to have to find a dealer tech with a brain...

I inquired about this again today at the other dealer I went to. This tech was cool and seemed to "have a brain", as he was able to program my MT PCM to work with my AT car and keys. But he said that no dealer can program an odometer, and that a facility in texas does all the cluster work. HE says they will not touch a used cluster, but if you buy a new one they will program the cluster with the proper mileage before sending it out. I asked him a couple of times more about what I could do, and he basically said there is nothing I could do about it, other than putting about 30k-odd miles on the MT cluster really fast.

 

Odometer tampering laws will keep anyone outside the factory from changing this. I think the proper procedure is to document what the original odometer said when you took it out, and what the replacement one said when you put it in. Years ago when I had a bad speedometer replaced under warranty, the dealer put a signed statement in the back pages of the owner's manual.

Given that you've got the chassis/body from one car and the drive train from another, what would the right mileage be?

Mileage always follows the chassis regardless of drivetrain, so I am simply trying to stay "legal" as it were. One would think that there would be more available channels to do so. Oh well, I will just ride with it as is, and remember to switch it out anytime I have to visit a dealer for service (unlikely).

 

I think you're legal as long as you disclose the swap. When I had that speedometer change I mentioned in my other post, the notation in the owner's manual was very official looking. That car is long gone, so I can't pull up exactly what it was. I think that these days when a car is sold there's a form where the seller swears that the odometer is correct, or if not discloses what they know about it.

Not like the old days, when you could open the speedometer and move the little wheels to the proper setting.
