09' R3
7600k
93 octane
5w-20 Valvoline - mineral

85% CITY driving

Ok here is the problem I am having........

My gas mileage has NOT gone above 14mpG...

Formula = Mileage on trip / Gal. o Gas Pumped = wtf...

Oil level is b/w the last mark by the top hole on the dip stick. (There are three marks b/w the two holes on the end of the tip stick) NO I have not pulled the plugs as of yet, 7600k... Previous owner could have not red lined it at all and I could have some gunk on the plugs... Maybe...

I have had this car for 3 weeks as of this coming Tuesday.

This coming Thursday, I am having a compression test done at Mazda. This was worked into the sell of the car prior to me purchasing along with a future new set of tires at cost... Yay...

Any guesses to a why my mileage is so shitty? I drive 25-30 miles total per day during the week and redline about one time a day. For the past week I have been driving conservatively so to see if I can get my MPG up at all. So far nothing...

but what kind of driving is your 25-30 miles? If it is all stop and go then yes, you'll get really poor milage.

What up Bacon!

I have a 14 mile drive TO work so 28 miles round trip per day. There is no traffic and its all city driving so I don't break 45mph. (Sometimes 55ish if I am running late) There are about 5 stop lights that I usually hit on the way to work. I try to shift under 4-5k mostly...

Over this past weekend, I went through a half a tank of gas. About 70% of the weekend driving was on highways. I took it easy all weekend with the exception of two WOT highway merging experiences.. :P

So far I have:
- Checked air filter ( totally clean )
- Topped off Oil

To come:
- Compression test @ Mazda on 6/10

How many miles to a full tank are you getting and do you run the AC? Just curious.

HAve you read the owners manual on the series 2 ?

I haven't. But I read here that it is in the manual for series II

Read it, then you will know.

I think E85 is used because it's way less costly than racing fuel, as it gives more power to turbocharged engines...the poor man's racing fuel? Problem with E85 is that it tends to wash out all the OMP's efforts, so yes, it is probably a good idea to use premix!
Private racing events are not applicable to road use. Comprehending specific applications is more relevant than just comprehending benefits in isolation.

For over 30 years it has been used in all rotaries by those who can comprehend its benefits, yes you will not see Mazda recommending it in any "official" publications, but privately and at racing events Mazda does use it.

Even Mazda Australia add it to the E85 gas, they are in the Targa Tasmania event as we speak...offically starts tomorrow (I think).

MY Series 2..

I have premixed with Saber Pro since Day one.
It is added insurance for Apex Seal lubrication.
15W40 mineral engine oil.
26,000 kms
about 20 mpg

Update:

Dropped off the 8 at the Dealer after work today. The magical phrase for the day is "performance related issues". This makes them check everything! Success! I said this in so to red flag a bunch of tests that they may have not done other wise.

This Weeks MPG Result:
40% Highway
60% normal to and from work in the city

MPG = 13.65...

I shifted under 4000 almost all the time if not lower. Still not sure why my MPG sucks but if that is how it's going to be then so be it. At least the Stealership is checking everything under the sun to try and figure it out. This gives me piece of mind that everything has been checked over on my used 7000 mile R3.

To be done from my understanding:
- Compression test
- Inspect Plugs
- Checking out the squeaky brakes
- Steering column is making a weird "rubbing" noise for the 1st 1/2 turn either direction. This could be the non-mechanical fully electronic steering that I am not accustom to but while it's in there I my as well have it looked at.

The loaner Mazda3 blows my anus btw...

that's very low. You should be getting 19-20 mpg mixed use. Even if I drive mine hard I can still achieve 20 mpg even with ac.
I would also change your oil, go for at least a 5w-30.

Mine does this too. So far I assume it might be related to some DSC sensor up high in the column or transmitted sound from the electric assist motor, but never had this confirmed either way. Seems to be normal. Let me know what they tell you.

(btw... the steering IS mechanical rack & pinion, but with electric assist instead of hydraulic).

Hey Pete,

They basically looked at me like I was crazy when I picked my car up. I am guessing they assumed it was some horrible metal grinding noise. Their diagnosis going in was just that, which is not what I told them when I dropped it off. My friend who drives an 06' basically said what you just described. I didn't figure anything was wrong, I just wanted to know what that noise was...

I have my Compression Test results and will post them when I am able to scan the pages. All looks well but it would be cool to see mine compared to someone else.

Premix question. What is the best way to ensure even mixing of the oil in the fuel tank? I have a ratio rite cup from years ago when I raced motorcycles, so its not a matter of how much to use.
So whats the deal? Just pouring it in before/after I get gas doesn't seem like it would be effective; the car has saddle tanks anyway. Filling up from 5 gallon cans doesnt seem practical either.
How does everyone else do it?

Ruel = 91 aki, usually Shell but sometimes others

8oz premix per fillup from low fuel light. Up until about 15K miles DSFM, now 4 oz Idemitsu and 4 DSFM

All kinds of oil from 0w20 to 10w60 and mineral to niche synthetic. Currently Valvoline mineral 20w50.

Commute is 80% hwy and usually gets 19-21mpg but have seen 23 all hwy. Oil viscosity doesnt seem to have any impact for me, but rather ambient temps. Hotter is better for me and that is irrelvant to viscosity in cold or hot weather.

Redline about 6 times a day.

Only non mechanical issues to date and all under warranty. Passenger seat cover replaced, driver seat heater replaced, and rear window shrowd replaced.
