Series II Premix, oil, gas, mileage...?
I think it makes sense to have a separate discussion for owners of the newer engines, and I'd like to know what you people are burning and how it's working out for you.
So!
Post your gas, oil, premix (if any), and results - MPG, engine age, problems (if any).
Fuel: 89
Oil: 5w20 dino
Premix: None
MPG: 18 (suburban driving)
after 1500 miles
no problems

The more I read about oils here, the more I think it makes sense to use two different oils - one general engine oil and one for burning. But that means modifications and (AFAIK) goodbye warranty
I guess I'm looking for a compromise in the meanwhile.

just get the OMP adapter, use 10w40/20w50 synthetic in the pan. if you have any warranty issues and you're worried about it - remove the adapter. its not a huge pain in the *** or anything

It's funny you mention this since I just started using premix with my last fill up after finally breaking-in my car.
No noticeable difference so far. I used 1/2oz for every gallon of gas.
Fuel: 93
Oil: 5w20 Castrol GTX
Premix: Idemitsu
MPG: 18 mixed driving (last tank before premix)
2300 miles and no issues.

No issues so far only 2950 miles on her to date.
Fuel: 93
Oil: 5W30 Royal Purple
Premix: Not at this time
MPG: 23 @ 50 / 50 Mix of city / highway
Pulling the MPG off of REV for the Ipod Touch and doing the math @ fill ups. So far I really like the Info I have been getting off Rev.

The Michigan "WANKEL"
- 2009 RX-8 GT purchased March 19, 2009
- current miles on odometer are about 6780 miles (was garaged all winter long)
- Fuel: 93 octane Shell (almost always)
- Oil: 5w30 Royal Purple synthetic
- Premix: Idemitsu (4 to 5 oz for a full tank of gas)
- MPG: 12-16 mpg in city or fun driving, 21-22 mpg in commute (when I drive the RX-8 to work)
- had the 5th and 6th gear synchro coating treatment done after grinding started in those gears early last year
- looks as though my Bose stereo "AudioPilot" feature is not working (and never has), and I will be having them check that out when I take it in to have it's first oil change after being garaged all winter (also having them change the trans and diff oils with appropriate Red Line oils).

Fuel: 91 usually buy at rebel
Oil: 5w30 pennzoil, might be using a different weight soon I dont know yet.
Premix: None, thought about doing it but until I buy some idemitsu I dont have any plans to premix.
MPG: 17ish not totally sure on my mpg, wish this car had a digital read out of mpg, my old 1999 car had that and this doesn't... just havnt bothered to check yet, but seems as if I get 260-300 miles a tank, so roughly 16-18 I guess if the tanks a 16 gal. Mostly 'spirited' driving.
Bought the car with 18,000 miles on it, now has about 20k and havnt had any issues in my 2k miles and seems to drive just fine.

2009 R3, 1900 miles (just bought it)
Valvoline 5w-20 conventional
93 Shell (its next to my house, so it's usually the same stuff)
15/24 mpg (tested city on full tank of nothing but short commutes to work, and hwy on long drive from Atlanta to Shreveport. Hwy drive took 3 tanks, roughly the same mileage on all 3. I don't have the heart to do another full tank of sedate commutes. Baby needs revs)
Sometimes it's hard to shift into 2nd, but from what I hear that's normal.

I see some of you are running synthetic oil. My friend who is the lead tech at a local dealership advised me not to use any type of synthetic or synthetic blend in my Series II cause Mazda will void the warranty. I plan on using conventional oil anyway but has anyone else heard this.

Yea someone posted on the forums saying they got denied based on using synthetic oil. Others have posted saying there's nothing in the owners manual that states you cannot run a synthetic, so mazda really shouldn't be able to deny you. Who knows, I've never been big on buying synthetic for any car I own so I doubt I will with this one either.

I don't use it (synthetic) because it's totally unnecessary. Same goes for premix, aftermix or any other genie-in-a-bottle. More so for the S2 engines.

For over 30 years it has been used in all rotaries by those who can comprehend its benefits, yes you will not see Mazda recommending it in any "official" publications, but privately and at racing events Mazda does use it.
Even Mazda Australia add it to the E85 gas, they are in the Targa Tasmania event as we speak...offically starts tomorrow (I think).
MY Series 2..
I have premixed with Saber Pro since Day one.
It is added insurance for Apex Seal lubrication.
15W40 mineral engine oil.
26,000 kms
about 20 mpg
