Introduction to VersaTuner

Hello RX-8 Club!

VersaTune is proud to be an authorized vendor here on rx8club.com.

We have had support for Series II RX-8 for over 3 years and recently launched support for Series I. Why the long delay in supporting Series I? We (foolishly) assumed that the market was well served by existing solutions. Over the years, we received so many requests to add support for Series I, that we decided to commit the resources and make it happen.

Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have. We look forward to working with everyone here to make a great platform even better.

Here is some background on VersaTuner:

What is VersaTuner?
In a nutshell, VersaTuner is software (Windows application) that can connect to your car and change the way your engine operates to give you more power, better fuel economy and greater control.

How do I use VersaTuner?
  1. Install VersaTuner application on any Windows PC/laptop/tablet.
  2. Connect it to your car by plugging one end of the VersaLink USB vehicle interface (or compatible J2534 interface) into a USB port of your computer and the other end into the OBD-II port located near the steering wheel of your car.
  3. Run VersaTuner and follow the on screen instructions to reflash your ECU.
  4. Disconnect the USB cable and enjoy the extra power of your car. The changes persist in the ECU, so you don’t need to keep your laptop/tablet connected.

What else can VersaTuner do?
VersaTuner allows you to:
  • Modify ( flash ) the firmware on your car's ECU for greater performance and control
  • Download, create, edit, share, and flash performance and special purpose tunes
  • Create, edit, share, and flash your own custom tunes
  • Perform real-time monitoring and alerting of engine operating parameters
  • Data log engine operating parameters
  • Graph and analyze your data logs
  • Read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) also known as check engine light codes
  • Mask DTCs to prevent them from triggering when monitored equipment such as intake manifold runner control has been deleted from the engine
  • Add custom functionality that is not available from the factory like launch control and no-lift-shift
We are constantly developing new features to expand the functionality of the supported platforms

Why VersaTuner?
VersaTuner has been designed to make it stand out from the competition in many ways:
  • Easy to use: all-in-one application for all your tuning needs with intuitive and well documented user interface and easy-to-follow wizards that guide you through the process. No need to remove the ECU, splice or solder any wires.
  • Affordable: no need for costly custom hardware, all you need is an off-the shelf USB vehicle interface, the software can be installed on any regular Windows laptop/tablet/PC.
  • Wireless monitoring/logging: use a Bluetooth vehicle interface and monitor the performance of your car on a big, full-color touchscreen of your tablet with no wires hanging under the dash. Forget about squinting at small low resolution screens found in other products.
  • Great support and community: we give personal attention to each of our customers and do our best to solve any issues as soon as possible. We are also active members of the car enthusiasts’ community, we listen to feedback and keep adding features that are most wanted.

I know some newbs will buy this just because it has launch control . Can you verify that your launch control actually works properly on an rx8 ? I struggle to see how you can do it on the oem software myself .

Yes it most definitely works We add custom code to enable it. We work off of the accelerator pedal position, vehicle speed, and clutch pedal state.

Here is a shot of the customization screen for Launch Control and No-Lift-Shift.

I'll get one done with an RX-8 soon. We have had this feature on the 2.3 turbos for years. The videos are all over Youtube.

there is a video on a s2 of the Launch control working. I saw it when VT first dropped for the s2 rx8 years ago...

This is my concern. I think I asked on that video w hile back, but I can't remember the answer. Is it ignition based? I'm assuming it is. If it isn't, it should be. This will work wonders for those who are boosted. "megaspool" feature comes to mind from the speed platform.
You don't want to flatfoot shift at under boost and it's cutting fuel instead of ignition. That could spell disaster really quick.

We use the stock rev limiter code. We just alter the rev limit value based on accelerator pedal position, clutch state , and vehicle speed. Fuel cut on direct injection is not an issue. I understand the concern with a port injected engine. We need to put a scope on a car and confirm how it's limiting revs.

Would cutting the throttle itself not be the safest solution? I'm not even sure if it's possible, but just throwing it out there.

I came here because I noticed this on the website.

Free minor updates
Are there any more details on what this may or may not cover? It was mentioned that the application would be expanded to allow >100% load values for FI applications. Would this be considered a minor update?

We have never charged for an update yet. Axis scaling would be considered a minor update. A major architectural change that requires a huge amount of work may be considered a major upgrade.

versatuner for a s1 rx8 bridgeported renesis

heya, im lookin at buying versatuner fr my 8 as iv full bridgeported my renesis and need a suitable tune that doesnt let the ecu retard the timing so dramatically that the brap smooths out like it is atm, also leans out at 4k rpm due to the large porting. and deleting airpump and o2 sensor codes. i also understand it has launch control capabilities too. do you supply a basic tune with these factors already considered? seems complex and iv never tuned myself before but its definatly time to start.
anyone with positive info?, id love to hear from yas 😊

We do not currently have a pre-built tune for a bridge ported RX-8. I would recommend custom tuning services from one of our VersaTuner Pro tuners.

Is it possible to use this to make a tune useful for running with a catless midpipe on an S1 manual trans car? It seems like running leaner just at idle would make the fumes more tolerable. Don't want to run leaner throughout, just at idle.

You can tune to run at around 15.5 afr at idle (if you know what you are doing) but this really wont solve the fumes issue

I'm catless too. Love the fumes, especially during a stop at traffic light.
