Over the time that Richard has been making shifters and selling them on here he has always gone above and beyond. I have had 3 bushings replaced as he upgraded them when he found new materials that would wear better

I think you should stick to the OEM if you say that it works.....you must have been lucky

That would just give him extra leverage to bend the **** out of it even more.

Just installed my ver 2.3 and the buzzing is loud. The reverse lockout isn't wonderful either. It works, but is very stiff. Wondering if it will break in with time.

^ I had to get a new OEM lockout plate from Mazda for my 2.3 s2 shifter. The original plate was gouged by the sharp machining on the lockout mechanism on the shifter base.

When i replaced this part, I also filed/dremeled/sanded accordingly to smooth these edges. I also carefully dremeled the OEM lockout plate to clear the lockout mechanism and have it operate smoother.

For the vibration noise, I lubed the spring and sliding mechanism with some heavier grease and it went away for a bit. Next time it's out I'll do a better job and it should go away completely.

Some work needs to be done for sure... Once you get it sorted it's very nice to shift however haha

I have a '05 that i bought new. I purchased an AFSS from Richard and installed it at 65K miles. I currently have 477K miles on the car. Other than having to replace the plastic cup on the bottom every so often, I have never had an issue.

477,000 miles?!
I'm hoping that was a typo and should have been 177.

For what it is worth. I have one of the original S2 builds on sale in the classifieds. It is the original version with the dowel/shim install. Did the job for me for the time I had my car.

Sorry I haven't visited in a long time. As people have noted we are up to 2.3 on this unit, just small progress.
We just sold the last one we had on the shelf and we were not going to build anymore. However we just got another order and one inquiry.
I told them I would make this post and see if there was enough interest so we could at least buy materials. If so we will run a batch.
Email me at: rap@axialflow.com or just buy one on the website.

I installed the newest S2 shifter and ran into a few issues with the synchro saver the previous owner had installed. However, once I got it aligned so that 1st gear and the reverse lockout work properly, the shifts feel very positive and direct (though as some have observed the reduction in throw isn't as significant as one might expect).

The only problem now is massive buzzing and vibration from about 6.5k to 9k. (Slightly reduced by holding the shiftknob, but it's still present). Not sure what can be done about this.

All short shifters run the risk of vibration being transfered more easily because the leverage is changed.
The gearbox now has more leverage against you.
It is car specific though and most do not have it. The Honda S2000 is the worst with about 20% of them doing it.
I am exploring one fix for this and someone is testing it.
BTW we have enough orders to run another batch. These will be 2.4 design with a beefed up lower shaft due to the one guy who bent a couple.
Since he is the only one in all the years we've been making these it wasn't really a must but it's not much to reprogram the machine.

2.2 - 2.4 Exchange?

I have one of the first that you made RP.

I've had several short-shift linkages and shifters in the past and this is the first in my experience to pass on vibration. Mine is a paper-weight laying in my tool chest and has been occupying that spot for months. Assuming that the 2.4 design you speak of deals with the deficits of the 2.1 or 2.2 that I currently own, I think it would be fair to be able to exchange mine for the current model as the one I currently have is useless to me as is.

For anyone out there that's interested in one, it's been installed twice; once when I got it, and then again with a modified sleeve. It was installed in the car for about an hour total. If my exchange idea isn't approved, I'll accept offers, just PM me.

You are welcome to the upgraded top bushing with the O-ring in it.
We previously offered these to all owners of 2.1 and 2.2 units.
Just Email me your address and we will shoot one out to you.
The 2.4 of course has not yet been tested, it's still in engineering phase.

I just got the short shifter in the mail, it feels great. although not as short throw as I was expecting when compared to s1.

One question, with short shifter installed I don't need to press down to get into reverse, but with OEM it works. and if I press down to get into reverse it will pop back to up to forward gear hight. is this normal? or could it be my reverse lockout tang has worn-out?

I know what is wrong and we can fix it for you. You just have to return it to the works. We will pay for the shipping.

Here are some links to videos showing the vibration issue on mine (which I believe is a 2.3 but am not sure as there was no documentation in the box).

I think I have the 2.2, but it seems like there was a major re-design for the 2.3 since it looks very different than mine... but I may be mistaken since I haven't looked at it in 2 years.

@Richard Paul if you need a car to test fit the 2.4 in I'm bringing my S2 to So Cal in a few weeks

Has anyone been able to get a hold of Richard Paul or axial flow? I have an issue with his newer version s2 short shifter (similar to the vibration issue above) , but also a much bigger issue now.

Ive emailed, pm'd him here, and used his site's contact form but I haven't received any response for months.
And he hasn't been active since Sept 2018 on this forum.

Some mods work on the 2.2 and 2.3 maybe the 2.1 but I can't remember I've made so many changes to this thing.
The first ones with the spacer plate will not be usable with the upgrades.
