WTF?? New tires again, only after 25k? (Kumho Ecsta SPT)

Sorry... I gotta vent (sorta)

So, I put new tires on my car right around the 50k mark. Got all 4 replaced at the same time at Discount Tire... ran me about $550-600 for all 4 with warranty... etc. I stopped in today to get a rotation... and the guy said the back two tires were going bald on the inside part. The tread on them seems ok by looking at them, but the inner part was bald and therefor he said they weren't able to rotate them.

He suggested I replace the back 2 tires since the front 2 were still ok (he estimated about another 10k miles of life on the front 2).

To me... they look ok, but I do see what he means about them going bald. Now since its a wear issue, the warranty I bought for them doesnt cover it. Of course, he quotes me about $450 for 2 Yokohomas for the rear.

F... that though!! I mean 25k miles ago I paid about 6 bills for new tires and now I gotta invest again. I guess those Ecsta's dont really go for too long.

I might also have some type of alignment issue or camber is off although I never noticed any type of alignment problems while driving and the camber doesnt look to be off.

Hmmmm.....

Your experience is totally typical of any UHP Summer tire like the SPT. Any UHP Summer tire can not be expected to last longer than 25k. With OCD tire rotation, alignment checkups every 2k and granny-like driving you might get 30-35k out of Kumho SPT's but I doubt that anyone falls into that caregory. I'm sure someone will claim they got more miles out of SPT's while driving their car like they stole it so...your mileage may vary. The only tires that last long (40-60k) drive like crap. Do you want your RX8 to drive like a sports car? Than you'll have to replace your tires every 25k or less.

25k out of UHP tires is pretty damn good!
my stockes = 17,000
Kumho MX's = 18,000
ToyoT1R's = approx 14,000, MIGHT make it to 20,000

inside wear = too much neg camber.

yea the more I think about it ... the more it makes sense. I knew these tires wouldnt go for too long but at first thought... it seemed like changed them very recently but after thinking about it, I think it was a year and a half.

So 25k miles of mainly all highway driving... and a year and a half later, I need new rears. Sucks... there goes all my extra cash!

You're lucky to get 25k out of your tires. My OEM's lasted around 17k, my RT-615's look to be wearing at a similar rate.

If the inside of the tires were bald, you need an alignment. You should have your alignment checked once a year.

yeah b happy with 25k I'm at about 15k maybe on my 452's and they are bald completely....as for inside wear that's negative camber time for an alignment!

as has been said - 25k is not too shabby for a performance tire on a performance vehicle.

My Toyo T1S's lasted about 24K miles. Just got Falken FK452's. But are you kidding me....what do you think you are driving ? an SUV ? Look at the treadwear rating. Each point is approximately equal to 100 miles. i.e. if it's a 300 treadwear rating expect about 25,000 to 30,000 miles. If it's 200, maybe 15,000 to 20,000. I remember I used to have to replace my rears on my Porsche back in the day every 8,000 miles.
