winter tires question

I was wondering.. is it a problem to run tires of slightly different _diameter_ between front and rears? Specifically, this guy is selling a set of 4 17x7.5 wheels with a 35mm offset (which should fit well on the 8?), mounted with two 225/50/17's and two 225/55/17's. Looking to use these as my winter wheels.

Is the 22.5mm difference in diamater going to be a problem (about an inch..)? And if not, would it be better to run the bigger tires as fronts or as rears?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it's better I ask this now then _after_ having bought the wheels, eh?

I don't think your tracion control would like it very much....or the ABS

Probably not the best idea......the offsets aren't great either

I don;t have traction control, but I guess that the ABS might complain.. Apparently these wheels came off a 350Z.

Some other questions (different set of wheels) if you don't mind:

1) Enkei RP05 rims (17/7J, 40mm offset) - can someone confirm fitment around the MT model's brakes? (I swear I searched...)

2) What does "J" or "JJ" mean in the rim size description???

3) Guy says he has 235/45/17 Continental tires mounted on these rims. Can you really mount 235mm (that's 9.25"!!) tires on rims that are 7" wide? Yea I know, I'm clueless about tires...

Much obliged,

sounds like youre trying to calculate the diameter of the wheels by deriving it from the size .. that does not work .. go to the manufacturers site and look up the diameter .. the discrepancy may be large enough to not fit in the wheel wel

same goes for the widths .. each wheel is approved for a range of rims .. maybe 7in - 9in or 8-9 or 7.5-9 so if he says theyre on theyre probably ok but also you can verify that on the same manufacturer charts

i would worry about staggered setups as long as they fit .. the whole abs or traction thing in my opinion wont be an issue .. all those systems should really be independent by wheel if not they would really not work

this is whats generally recommended

225/50-17
215/55-17

here are sample specs
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=0

here is a better one that shows 225/50 vs 225/55 for that tire
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=5

225/55 VR17
101V XL
1819 lbs. 50 psi 11/32" 24 lbs. 6-8" 7" 9.2" NA 26.8" 777
225/50 VR17
98V XL
1653 lbs. 50 psi 11/32" 25 lbs. 6-8" 7" 9.2" NA 25.9" 803

rim sizes between 6 and 8 are ok
.9 inch in diameter .. gut feel may work but i would confirm with someone that has 26.8 wheels or bigger actually on the car

tirerack may not have all the size but bridgestone or dunlop or other brand sites will

Huh? Why not? Isn't wheel diameter = sidewall height x 2 + rim diameter ?

Thanks for the responses so far, guys. If you wouldn't mind, just these two things left:

1) What _does_ the "J" mean??

2) How to measure wheels for fitment around the brakes (besides actually putting them on the car). I have an opportunity to go look at this set that's for sal tonight, so I would appreciate an answer before then. (Or a confirmed report of the Enkei RP05's fitting on the 8?)

Thanks,
-D

With 17" rims you have to try them on the car to tell. I tried 4 different rims before i got a set that fit. As it is there is less than 1/4 inch clearance between the caliper and the rim...

I think "J" is an old size throwback for the tires ?? Don't think it's relavant here....

You are more worried aboutt the rolling circumference difference than the difference in diameter. ( I know they are related...). This is what will interfere with the ABS.

The car has large wheel wells.....esp at stock height. Most rubbing problems come from offset problems....IE where the center mounting surface is related to the outside and inside of the wheel

Hope this helps
