Ross knows what he is talking about. That is barely more aggressive than stock and will fit no problem. 18x9.5 +45 with 275/35 (Enkei RPF1 in case you were wondering) is what tons of performance minded people run without rubbing or modifications. I hope Atilla finishes that chart he was working on soon. This stuff is getting redonkulous.

You know, I was shopping for a wheel package for a while. I read every post in this thread and many more. I didnt really understand why some fit and some wouldnt until I read one simple explanation on some other site somewhere. Here it is.
Stock factory RX-8 18x8 +50 225/45R18
The offset numbers start at 50. If you go +45, its only 5mm difference in a positive direction... outward I believe. The farther you go from 50, the more its offset. If you buy a +20, its quite a ways from 50, therefore they will be offset outwards 30mm. If you add a wider rim, it will look wider, and stick more towards the fender. If you couple it with a big tire, wide and high, you are getting into the fender. I found a tire size calculator online here http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit
You fill in the stock size, and the sizes you are looking at, and it tells you the size difference. Width, circumference, even how it will affect your speedometer. It worked for me. I have 18x8 +45 wheels now with 225/45-18s on the front, and 245/40-18s on the rear. The backs look way wider than the fronts, fit nicer closer to the fender, but are the same diameter within .5" of stock size.

I have been doing research about this but it is not that easy. I'm trying to reduce trial and error. It's a big investment and is for solo/autocross. So, I want to be sure that I get the most aggressive offset and width, without any rubbing or loosing tire circunsference. Trying to hear from personal experience. Also looking at the racing threads here and consulting with Good-Win.
It seems that a 245/40/18 is the best option for 8.5 or 9" width. Deciding offset.

^ You will be fine with the specs mentioned by Ross. There will be no rubbing and you can go with 9.5 if you want. You can drop the car on coilvers at about 1.5in-2in too and still won't rub.
Ok, I'll be nice and repost what has been said.
Best/Easiest Auto-X Setup: 18x9.5 +45 with 275/35/18. No fender modifications. You can lower the car to 3 inches no problem.
Less Grippy/More Daily Driven Setup:: 18x8.5 +40 with 245/40 or 255/40. Both will fit with zero fender modifications. The weight of the wheel being an inch less is infintesimally small once you factor in the weight of the tires.
So, it all comes down to if this is a dedicated track setup, or your daily driven every other weekend auto-x / track day setup.

im thinking of putting 20" rims on my 8.Has anyone had much trouble with 20s fitting correctly?
Found a sweet deal on some 2nd hand rims and tyres,the wheels im looking at are foose df-5s
Front wheels are 235/30/R20
Rear wheels are 285/25/R20
any suggestions would be welcome.

Well alrighty then... they should fit fine without fender rolling. You may need to have a little camber in the back to avoid rubbing, or, just roll the rear fenders.

Come back here with wheel width and offset and I can tell you if they will fit.
benben: if you're gonna run 18x8.5F +32 and 18x9.5R +38 you can run 245/40F and 255/40R - fenders will need to be rolled flat. You can run a smaller tire but it's not necessary.

I'd go with that and you shouldn't need a roll. Depends on the tire but Kane has that exact size and offset and didn't require a roll with his car lowered. If you go to a 255/35 you're going to have your speedo off a bit not to mention possible needing a roll and it will drop your car down another 1/2".
