Stoptech is finishing, or probably selling the rear BBK as we speak. There's nothing wrong with Stoptech. In fact, if I had the money, I would most definitely invest.

why are they so expensive? There are similar setups for other cars for much less. For example the Audi S4's almost 13" brakes. You can get replacement rotors like these for $600 (that's both) Is it because they're new? Imported?

I just put on a kit you might be interested in. Wilwood 2 piece rotors and superlight forged calipers.

My weight savings: 3 lbs per wheel on the rotors and another 10 lbs per wheel on the calipers.

3 lbs of rotating mass and 13 lbs of unsprung weight is nothing to sneeze at! The kit also happens to work with the stock wheels. I personally wanted the stronger calipers up front first beforre persuing the lighter rotors out back.

Aren't Wilwood's brake rotors, and possibly calipers manufactured by another company, i.e. Brembo, Alcon, etc.? In any case, Wilwood makes top-notch products.

That's cool that you are focusing your budget in other areas.

Off-topic: Why a turbo kit, other than price and it's complete? I was thinking about going custom.

I think wilwood make their own caliper, Cause brembo or alcon usually cost at aleast three time more than wilwood. But for half and half use(track and street) ,wilwood are hard to beat.

The price of the Project Mu rotors are for the pair so it's 1,200.00 total... I also want the front and rear rotors to match and do not want to increase the diameter as the car does not need it, and it adds weight...

I am sourcing a set of Brembo calipers custom painted silver with the Mazdaspeed logo valved to match the bias on the RX8 (Like the ones Mazdaspeed put on one of their cars...). This will be a custom setup and I want it to be custom as it is too easy to go and pickup a set that is commercially available... I want as much as possible on the car to be custom...

I will most likely order the Project MU as they are coming up the better of the two and with lots of racing activity...

Only the front for now. They might do a rear if demand is high. I can't say costs as I got a discount for being first in line but it should be way less than Brembo. The rotors are only slightly bigger than stock at 13.1" but are considerably thicker providing better cooling and heatsinking. And yes, Wilwood makes their own calipers as opposed to Stoptech.

Here is another option,Tirerack selling the brembo gt kit (328mm disc) for $2500, a little bit bigger rotor.

Good gravy. That's freakin' expensive. Personally, I think the stock rotors are big enough. They just need to be of a stronger, and lighter two-piece design.

As cortc has mentioned, the stock RX8 brakes really are large enough. The sport package sports a 12.8" or so rotor up front. Plenty large enough in OD, but actually only about 1.1" thick. On top of that, its extremely heavy. There is def a lot of unsprung weight and most importantly rotating mass that could be lossed in this area.

One of the first things we realized when this car came out was the capability of the brakes. Mazda has always been one of the better manufacturers when it comes to factory brakes. 2nd and 3rd generation RX7 come with 4 piston calipers stock.

That doesnt say that it cant be improved on. Our set up uses a slightly larger OD rotor at 13.1" but increases the thickness to 1.25". In addition to the thickness, it also incorporates a directionally vaned internal structure to further cooling. All this and it weighs 3 pounds lighter than stock per side!!! We also use a much larger 4 piston caliper that uses a larger brake pad all while being 10 pounds lighter than stock, again, per side!!
Custom colors on the calipers are also available. I ll have more pics of the kit installed on Rlfletch's car hopefully this weekend.

Once everything with this site is organized, expect to see a GB for this front kit for well under $1400. Including everything you need for a direct bolt on affair. Stainless lines included.

Sorry to hijack the thread, i just saw your post and saw that you were totally on to something. You can never go wrong with Project Mu parts. They build top quality pieces and are always very bling bling. Add to that custom brembo calipers and you really are on a whole other level. I wish all of us had funds set aside like you do to play with our cars

rotaryred: Thanks, I special ordered them and they are being shipped from Japan... They have been built and delivered to the freight forwarding company and will be leaving the first week of September in a container for the US... I should have them by October and once they are on the car will post lots of pics as usual. The car is currently sitting on jack stands in the garage next to a new set of K104s patiently waiting for her new rims...

I ordered them in black the sizes are 19x8.5 47mm Offset w/ a 34mm lip and 19x9.5 55mm Offset w/ a 59mm lip (F/R) and the tires are 235/35-19 & 265/30-19 respectively... The brand & model are again Hankook Ventus K104s

Oh and the rims are great and light! But since you really like black wheels, why not go for the MS magnesium forged ones? They are dark, if not totally black, at the same weight with the SSRs

The SSR professors are by far the best looking wheel they make i dream of having those rims on my car. They look really crazy with a super low offset you can get 18's in a 0 offset and maybe even negative offset.

A month won't hurt her a bit, I keep a trickle charger on her and once a week start her up to get the juices flowing... Yes, it sucks to have to weight and I was thinking about a ride yesterday when I remembered she is sitting up on jack stands, but then good things come to those who are patient...

The SSRs are really nice wheels, when I got the Axis hiros they were planned as temporary; great wheels and turned out to be a great experiment on proper fitment for our cars... Wanted light 19s and three piece wheels all along and something semi-custom that you won’t find off the shelf...

The SSRs weigh 16lb but did you had a chance to put the Hiro's on a scale? Just curious to see the difference between those two great rims....

I am going to install these pieces of art this week. I know the stock brakes are exceptional but putting Brembo on the car never hurts (only the wallet :D )
However, i will post pics whenever I have them on with the Black Mazdaspeed wheels that I will be installing on friday.
