Stock rim width --
They do that because 7.5" wheels will technically work with the stock size tires. They just want you to have a broader selection because that means, to them at least, that you are more likely to find something you like.
It's marketing.

Rim size
Straight from the Mazdaspeed brochure (I work in a Mazda dealer) - the Mazdaspeed wheels that are available in the US are 18x7.5 and are 17lbs a piece (They look similar to the T5 wheel on the Mazdaspeed Ver. 2 in Japan).
Why the difference from stock width I have no idea, it can not save that much weight.
I know the narrower the wheel better the snow performance....but who is going to drive the Mazdaspeed wheels in winter?

something jedi doesnt noe... the force has not always been with him. :-P
Yea i was surprise to find that out too, like a year a go though. Basically that is the only thing that saves weight, too many spokes and forged magnesium cancel out the weight difference.

Stock RX-8 Wheels are 18*8 or 16*7.5
ALL Mazdaspeed wheels specifically designed for the RX-8 are also 18*8. This includes the ones that are on the Mazdaspeed Ver.2 Concept car. To be fair you can get them for the Mazda 6 in 17*7 as well.
The only 18*7.5 wheels you will find from Mazdaspeed aren't even meant for the 8, but the 6. These were part of a special "mazdaspeed" package in canada that some of the dealers were putting on the 8s when they arrived nothing more. Those wheels are called the MS-T II and aren't the same as the ones on the Ver2 car.
