I'm looking into getting a spare tire for my RX8. I'm not to comfortable with just the tire repair kit!

Anyone had any experience on best place to get one?

Also, how much trunk space do I give up?

 

You give up a fair amount space. The spare tire basically takes up everything after the well in the trunk. Watch the for sale section on this board because people sell them. You could also make a WTB thread and maybe someone will sell you their kit.

 

You realize "a spare tire" pretty much means Mazda's temporary spare -- a full size spare tire isn't really an option here. Along with the tire itself you'll want to get the mounting kit. It lifts the tire up and gives access to the remaining trunk space. Yeah, I imagine you'll see the whole kit for sale in the forums from time to time. You can always get it from Mazda, of course.

I find the trunk is still useable with the spare mounted. Depends on what you need to carry of course. My golf bag fits in just fine, or several bags of groceries, various luggage, etc... The reduction of space is more than offset by having a viable spare tire, imo. Then again I'm an old fart who can't let go of 20th century things like spare tires, land lines, etc...
