sorry for all my comments, but i think i have a bit more knowlege about this tire..

i put ~75k mile on two sets of them..

great street tire. really good in the wet.. did fine on the track, if you are and still are learning.. but still way more than you can exceed on the street..

they wear fine..

and yes they flat spot if you dont drive for 2 days or it is cold.. 5 miles cures that..

i have a set as a spare. great tires, for those that have no ego about what they could do, and drive on the street.

I put 25,000 miles on a single set of this tire and found swoope's review to be right on. You can find the limits of this tire on the track but for the street it was great.

Great value for the money! I would have bought another set but I needed something with more grip. As a daily driver tire I would totally buy another set.

 

I liked the Bridgestone OEMs much much better, but a totally different class of tire. The SPTs are fine for the cheap price, but I won't buy them again. I wanted a summer tire that I could still drive in the winter (when there's no snow, of course) and they have accomplished this rather well.

Next time, maybe I will spend a little more and try out the Toyo T1r in this same category.

... or maybe I'll get a higher performance summer tire and get a 2nd set of wheels for winter tires. Problem is, the wheels I want for my summer tires are just too expensive.

 

I agree with lilring, they seem to wear fast. I have 18K on my SPTs and they are basically worn out. I got 35K on the OEM Dunlops. My driving is mostly highway. They are good handling tires and fairly quiet though.

I am currently shopping for summer tires again, my SPT's lasted about 28,000 (mostly highway, no tracking or AutoX) and I was very pleased with them - Khumos are still at the top of my list. I thought the wear was good, although the last month or so that I had them on before I changed to winters, they wore down to nothing VERY fast - I knew they were nearing replacement, but they went from "I need to change these soon" to "wow, these are dangerous" very quickly. If I get another set, I'll be more aware of how fast that goes and change them a bit sooner (I was just trying to get to the winter switch and worry about it then).

 

mine do that too its annoying.....but imo these tires can take turns very well....straight line isnt as great but thats not as important when NA

The 8090 are a 280 UTQG tire. I used them street/track days until they had nothing left to give (about 10 months time). They didn't chunk if I recall. From my experience, 300 UTQG is pretty much the limit for a tire which sustains track duty without chunking or delaminating. I've seen people at the track (especially in the novice run groups) wonder why their tires are coming apart and when I check the UTQG, it's usually a tire that's in the 300-400 range. One time a guy was driving an Accord with Hawk DTC (ultra high temp race) pads and 400 treadwear tires. The tires turned in to charcoal briquettes after a couple sessions

 

I checked my mileage when I put the SPT's on my car, and I'm a little off. Looks like I've had them on my car now for just over 18K miles. At the rate they're currently wearing, I should be able to get 30-35K miles out of them before they need replacement.

 

I put on a set of SPTs both because of price and swoope had indicated before that he got a lot of miles out of them. They do flat spot after sitting a while, but there doesn't seem to be a traction difference between them and the stock potenzas, plus they seem to have more traction at low temperatures than the stock tires ever had. The only other thing I've noticed is it seems the sidewalls aren't as rigid as the potenzas, but so far it doesn't seem to affect grip on the road.

that gives me a bit of clarity on that tire.. odd that you can get a 140 or 280 tire on a car..

i got to ride with an instructor in a rx8 with the spt. they did fine. he was so smooth..

That's good to know. Thanks. Our cars are easier on tires than most nose heavy cars.

 

The side wall strength are really good on these tires -- had them on a different car. But they are not really track tires. I'll be honest -- I usually go to the track with cheep o tires that get abused and thrown away because I tear the shzt out of them.

 

If you're attending track days with "cheapo" tires (less expensive than a Kumho SPT), then you're probably rolling around on bricks for traction.

 

Ive used these tires for my last 2 sets. My first set lasted me roughly 18K miles. My current set has exactly half the tread left on all 4 and theyve been on for a little over 12K miles. I paid 101 each on tirerack for them when I got them, not sure if theyre still that cheap.

I love them, work fine for me.

 

SPT's are a fine tire for the price. Sidewalls are deffinitely not as firm as the Stock Potenza's or SO3's I have on now, that can be good or bad depending on what you want. Traction extrememly good in rain and very good in dry. Even in winter they were ok. I had them in a couple inches of snow one night on a surprise storm....while I wouldnt reccommend it, they did ok...haha.

Got 28,000 on them and had at least a few thousand left, but replaced them when Tirerack was blowing out SO3's for cheap last spring.

I would buy them agian for sure if there wasnt something that is way more expensive being blown out somewhere.

 

Yeah I think my SPT's had about 20K before I sold them. Handled great in the dry, definitely one of the best tires if you're on a budget.
