New Wheel Offset Question
New Wheel Offset Question
Now I've already searched about the whole offset thing. I just don't really understand it too well. Probably because I can't visualize it.
Anyways, I've decided to get some TE37s (18x8.5 all the way around ... not staggered at least I don't think). This is .5" wider than the stock size. Stock offset is 50mm. That's 1.9" which puts roughly 6" on the backside and 2" on the front side. Ok, so here's my thinking. Do I still want to keep 2" on the front side (of course this is all dependent on my initial assumptions)? The TEs in that size come with a 22, 30, 40, and 50 offset. I think 50 is out because wouldn't that make the rim stick out too much. I would think 22 is too little and may cause interior rubbing. So it kinda leaves 30 and 40.
So am I way off or do I have the right idea?

Of all of the choices 50 would stick out about 1/4 inch more than stock. Offset is the measurement of the mounting surface to the center of the wheel....so +22 would stick out over an inch more than stock.....+ 40 would result in the rim being 16 mm more out and about .5 inches more in toward the strut which would be OK. To keep the rim in the same place as stock on the outside....a 55 ofset would be needed....

no problem, many are running 9.5" on 45mm offset all around so that is plenty within the fender, based on that you should safely be able to use 30mm offset with an 8.5" wheel and not rub, though that would create a significant scrub radius issue on the front and more body roll leverage against the springs/sways.

if you push the wheels out with offset you are increasing the length of the lever arm working against the spring/shock/swaybar, for small amounts it's not much effect, 20mm increase is a lot though, if you have an aftermarket spring/shock combo it won't be that dramatic but a stock suspension already has a lot of body roll, you definitely don't want to increase it more than stock.
8.5 with a 22 offset should not rub in the fronts (depending if you get the right tire size)i would go with 30 on the conservative side...i dont know about the rears.. i got 9.5 with a 30 offset in the back..
and 8.5 with a 40 or 45 offset in the front and a 20mm spacer..
and 8.5 with a 40 or 45 offset in the front and a 20mm spacer..
