well...the car will be 2 years old on st patty's day...im at 24,500 miles and my tires are BALD ! the new kumho ecsta asx (420 thread rating) are going on tomorrow.

i got a good price on the 245/40-18's and i cant wait to get these thing broken in and go play on some of the same curves i like to play on now. i know there is going to be a world of difference


ive read a lot of the threads, and i know the consesus is the spt's...but like i mentioned, good deal on these. does anyone have a reason i SHOULDNT get these? i can always cancel my appt.

the ASX is an all-season tire, where as the SPT is a summer tire. I think, in general, all-season tires don't perform as well as summer tires, but for daily driving, this probably isn't a concern.

 

what kind of deal and from where?

 

i know a guy who knows a guy who's cousin said he could get the tires over night from a guy who "owes him"....

i got them through a local Tires Plus for the same price as on TireRack ($125/tire). I pay tax this way, but no shipping, and the install price is cheaper this way too. ALso, he had them in town (my reason for going with the ASX over the SPT). i know the performance on the summer tires is a little better, but with the same rating i am sur ei dont drive hard enough to tell a difference. and they are going to be an improvement over the stock shoes!

I went with the ASX's and think they are a great all around tire. Unless you are driving at 9/10ths you will never know the difference in dry weather. In wet weather, the ASX is a much, much better tire.

The SPT is outstanding in the wet.

 

both being "ultra high performance"...i gues "ranking" would have been a better word.

the ASX have a 420 tread rating while the SPT have a 320....so the ASX should last longer.


with regards to the track times, diff companies will get different results. but really...when do any of us drive our cars hard enough to tell a difference? i am sure those who autocross and such might care, but in the everyday world of driving around town, or even out on the twisties on the weekend, it really wont matter.

Those track times were both tirerack tests, using the same car, on the same track, under comparable conditions (the wet track comes from a sprinkler system, not rain, so the only variable that might have been different between the SPT and ASX tests would've been temp). See here:

My point wasn't that you could tell a difference between the 2 in the rain...in fact, precisely the opposite...Kurt V said that the ASX was much, much better in the wet...based on the tirerack tests, I'd guess most of us wouldn't notice any difference.

Based on my experience driving SPT's in the rain, the only tire that would be "much, much better" would be something like a true racing rain tire.
