I've noticed that mazda has a problem with this, have the same problem with 626 and mazda3. The 626 has excessive brake dust up front and the occasional squealing. I find it gets worse with each car wash temporarily, then goes away after about a mile. my dad's mazda3 has excessive dust on the front, but so far no squealing.

My Mazdaspeed Protege did the same thing.

I don't have any brake squeeling yet (build date June 04) but man, these brakes give off more dust than any car I've had!

Same here. No squeeling, but LOTS of dust. All pads give off dust, but these brakes exceed them all. On the other hand, they stop the car on a dime, so I guess I can live with it for now.

For the first time in a long time, my brakes have stopped squealing. I have no idea why. Could it be the recent rain? Or because I tried to make an appointment to have the TSB work done. Maybe it was that I took the front plate off today.

I had the pads replaced a week ago...took copy of tsb to dealership and service guy was cool w/ it. I was kind of surprised at that. Usually they try to argue w/ me that it doesn't need/isn't doing what i'm saying. But this time it was smooth. I was getting real tired of the squealing and am glad they fixed it.

I think it's the front plate . . . or lack thereof . . . :p Either way, I've had the same experience with past cars, and I sometimes wonder if it's like squeeks and rattles in the interior--temperature, humidity, the frequency that our ears can hear, etc. affecting the result. Where are the audio engineers on this forum?

i did the same thing and it eliminates the noise completely, and I had no problems since I told them about the problem and had them look up the TSB themselves

it was seriously getting on my nerves, especially rolling up to lights

Thanks Mazda!!!

Do the dealers have to order the pads or do they typically have these in stock?

I think someone else mentioned it above, but after having taken my car in last Thursday to have the pads replaced, I have almost no brake dust on my front wheels, and I drove my 8 over 200 miles this weekend. That and the lack of squeal makes these brakes far better than the pre-TSB brakes. I also noticed that the replaced brake pads/calipers are larger than the original ones.

Thanks snap-on and snizzle. Sounds like I should make a call to the dealer before I take it in. Hopefully, they'll go ahead and put the order in for me - I've already complained twice about the squealing before the TSB came out.

New pads installed last night. No turning, gooped with stuff that looks like a silicone grease, not the silver anti-squeak stuff they put on last time. See pictures, attached.

Too early to tell about squeaking or dust. I'm planning on doing the bed-in procedure mentioned either early in this thread or elsewhere, hoping that the brand new pads will cut through the glaze you see in the pics.

I went the dealer today for the brake squeal as well as my 8 month oil change/tire rotation. I brought the TSB with me, but the service rep gave me a hard time as he said that is only to assist mechanic with diagnosing problems. He said the mechanics would check it out.

The mechanic recommended that the front brake pads be replaced and he ordered the new pads for me. The dealer is supposed to call me when they come in.

I had my left rear tail lens and ac TSB done last week when I informed the service writer the TSB regarding the brake squeal. He just called, pads are in, car goes in tomorrow.

It's been mentioned here on a few posts... CALIPERS? Are you guys REALLY having calipers replaced too? No mention of calipers on this TSB, just FRONT brake pads on all models equipped with 18" wheels.

2 Charles Cope,
That grey crap looks like Molybdenuim (sp) grease... something the HONDA regional rep had us use on their 1990 cords/ludes for customers who complained about brake squeal. Never had any complaints from Civic owners though... must be why they are the choice for ricers?

It is on my completed work order (and the service manager said) that both the front pads and calipers were replaced. Since both are noticeably larger than the rear pads/calipers, I don't doubt it. I don't have any goop on mine, though, like Charles does. Would take pictures for side-by-side comparison, but I don't have ready access to a digital camera. May be able to post pics by the end of the week if needed.

Hmmm... Just got mine done today and they didn't do my calipers, they just did the brakes. Wonder why?

they only did the brakes on mine as well, no caliper replacement as the TSB does not call for it.... it's essentially just a shim to eliminate the noise

if they replaced the caliper, they did extra work

My receipt says..
1 F1Y2-33-23Z Pad Set, FRT CALIPER $97.30 List $81.69 Net
0.6 Hour Labor

Installed new pads per bulletin.

Could it be that some of our members see the "Frt Caliper" and think they are getting them too? Not for $97!

Uhh, so what else would "FRT CALIPER" stand for? I was going both by the work order (same as yours but does not list the price since I'm still under warranty) and what the service manager told me. Perhaps he was mistaken...?

I'm pretty sure my old front calipers/pads (which seem to be larger now) were the same size as the rear ones, but since I'll have my hands on a camera tomorrow, I'll post pics then and perhaps we can draw a better comparison with your pics.

I think your fronts have always been and better be...bigger than the rears.

Hm. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention before. Can anyone who hasn't had their pads replaced confirm this?

I'm going to answer my own question and say I apparently wasn't paying close enough attention before--as I'm browsing through the Gallery section of this forum, I'm noticing everyone else's front calipers are larger than their rears--sorry for being so inobservant. Still, I'm confused why they would list the front calipers on the work order.

Anyway, I got a hold of a digital camera and snapped some pics of the replacement front pads. These pictures aren't the greatest and likely won't help a lot, but perhaps you can notice that they're darker than the lighter gray ones that are on our rear wheels. You can't tell because of the flash, but my front pads are almost black.

I also 'bedded' my brakes tonight (http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm) and noticed there is almost no brake dust (and still no squeaking!) on my front wheels. A stark, and welcome, change from the prior pads.
