Unhappy Brake pad replacement/possible rotor replacement questions

Well, I had planned on getting my brakes done close to 3 months ago, but due to extreme time constraint due to work and school, I have been limited in doing so.

I told myself I HAD to do my brakes this coming weekend, and even made time to complete them. After getting a quote from the dealer, I was informed it would be 200 dollars for front brake pads only, and 370 for front and rears. So, I ordered my own brake pads, and they should be coming in very soon and I will proceed to complete them myself. But yesterday, when I pulled into work, right before I came to a halt I heard a grind. I freaked out, and assumed I was grinding into my rotors. I parked the car, let the rotors cool off, and felt the rotor face itself. The fronts had very slight ridges (barely bumpy) on them, and the rears were perfectly smooth. I thought to myself, as long as I don't grind anymore on the rotor surface for the fronts, I may be able to get that resurfaced out. So, I parked the car at my place 2 seconds down the road, and went and grabbed my fathers extra car, and proceeded to drive it for the remainder of the week. (I bought the car 10k miles ago, and I'm not sure if the rotors have ever been replaced. Vehicle has 90k on it.)

However, once I came to research things about rotors, I began to see that the stock rx8 rotor is something like 23mm, and the minimum LEGAL thickness is 22mm even after being resurfaced. It looks like theres no room for any type of resurfacing.

My question is:
1.I'm going to need to replace my rotors correct? These can't be resurfaced.
and
2. Where is the best place to order online OEM rotors that are shipped in a timely fashion? (need to complete this weekend due to daily driver)

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Brakes are not something to take chances with. If the rotors are close to the legal limit anyway you might aswell change them if you intend on keeping the car for any amount of time. The next set of brake rotors should last the remaining life of the car! Why drive around with bad rotors when you will need to buy them anyway and they wont need replacing again. Scored rotors could also damage the new pads.

By the looks of it you can get a set of rotors for a little as $80 on ebay with next day shipping options.

Hope that helps

I ordered a set of 4 new drilled/slotted rotors that came with 8 pads for 179.00 shipped out from a company on ebay called 88 rotors. These rotors and pads fit the sport suspension and can be used with stock calipers. I couldnt be happier with this purchase. I got them installed 3 days ago and it took about 2 hours with a friends help. They also look alot nicer than stock rotors and for this price I felt as it was a steal. If you get your own parts im sure a local shop wont charge more than 120 to put them on man. They also have a kit for the regular suspension...

Ehhhh that's really cheap and sketchy. I've neve heard of these so I cannot make any comment but from what I have seen, cheap products from eBay generally don't hold up too well. Post back after awhile and comment on your experience with them.

I installed front drilled/slotted rotors from ebay back when I first bought my car... It was kind of an emergency and I needed something on there until I could upgrade to a quality set all around. Both front rotors warped after 4 months, I would get a really hard shutter from the front end when braking. Luckily that was around the time I upgraded everything. Just wanted to stick my 2cents in there. Keep an eye on them and the feel of the car after a little while to make sure they arnt doing the same just in case.
Like everyone says on here, you get what you pay for.
Typically these companies tend to send really crappy brake pads with these packages from what Ive heard around the internet as well. I remember specifically not using the pads they sent me because they looked like some economy brand organic pads. Anyway good luck, glad you didnt pay those dealer labor costs at least.

There are a bunch of different companies making rotors/pad kits on eBay but I went with 88 rotors. So far everything is going ok, I can't really add much since I've owned them for only 2 weeks but the install went great. My friends dad helped me with install and he's a mechanic. He said the rotors were pretty solid for 180 as he inspected them along with the pads they came with. Everything seems smooth and it stops on the dime now, no noises whatsoever. I guess as time goes by and something goes wrong I'd surely tell everyone to avoid them if my experience turns bad...

Many will just say you get what you pay for. The rotors and pads were pretty good for price, made sure my pads were ceramic and they were. If you can't afford 500 just roll with that deal. It wasn't that I couldn't afford a high quality set of rotors and pads I just felt like I don't need to invest that much in a kit since my 8 isnt my daily driver. Just get 4 rotors from them and get your own hawk ceramic pads and you'll still only spend less than 260 on rotors/pads. Any shop shouldn't charge you more than 140 for install since its only a 2 hour job if that...
