Brake Job , I have a question

I did my brakes this past weekend . I follow the DIY on it and did fine. But I notice yesterday that , there's still a squealing noise some where in there , when I brake.

I'm thinking that my problem was that I did 'nt cleaned the area right . Should've I gotten a can of some spray to cleaned the area or what else could it be?

I got the Hawk Ceramic Pads the one everyone mentions.

Any help ? Thanks........ I feel I'll be working on this this weekend ..... Again

Did you go to Mazda and get a new set of metal/Teflon brake shims for the front pads and the rear pads (if yours were toasted or overheated?)? Or clean the old ones and put them back correctly with proper prep (see next)? Did you use hi-temp brake grease on the shims and pads as specified? Also brake grease on all the sliding surfaces where the pads ride ond slide on the clips? Did you religiously clean the calipers of all residue, dust, and crud with brake cleaner and a rag?

Not using brake cleaner won't make your brakes squeel. I'd say you didn't put the brake hardware back in correctly. There should be 2 backing plates to the pads and possibily a few clips/springs. Also make sure that you bed in the new pads correctly, go to stoptech's website and they have a good write up.

I check out that Stoptech and didn't see anything in regards to a write up. They mention that they moved. Did I miss something. When I took out the brakes I just pulled out the Front Pads and nothing else . The clips that were there were not touch . I only did the front now.

Thanks

1. if the squealing is loud and pronounced, id say one of the metal clips has gotten dislodged and is between the pad and the rotor. that will make a racket and dont ask how i know

2. if its not that loud, you may have to re-bed the pads. cant recall if you did that to start with. this is necessary to deposit a thin layer of brake pad material to the rotor surface. you actually brake on that layer and not on the metal of the rotor.

3. some performance pads will squeal a bit. my hawk HP-Plus pads do. thats normal.

4. if the rotors were oily when you out the pads on and werent cleaned carefully, the oil can ruin the pads and they will need to be replaced. a tiny bit of dirt shouldnt be a problem.

best to take it apart and look. ive replaced brakes many dozens of times on many different cars and never had a problem when i was careful.

use more brake grease on all sliding surfaces between the caliper and the shims/clips

that should keep the brakes quiet for a while, until the grease wears out

This reminds me of a time when my friend got his brakes done. We were out driving around and then hear a grinding noise. I was trying to figure out where it was coming from, so turned radio off and rolled windows down. then it gets louder and louder, kinda the same sound as if you ever turned on a garbage disposal with a piece of silverware in it. We stoped and i was asking him what he has been doing to his car, he's like i have not done anything just came back from getting my brakes done but other then that just been driving aroud. So i go and look at the brakes driver side seems ok, passenger side front is ok get to the rear brake thats when it starts to get a bit funny. Seems that the person that did his brake put the brake pad in upside down, dont ask me how he did it cause i still dont get how you can do it. I grab a screwdriver and push the pad up and we take it for a spin. for about 2 miles noise-free, then the noise comes back. Tell him to go to my house. Mind you its about 3 AM and about 55 degrees out side. I am in the middle of the street, wheel off and doing a brake job. Guess you can never underestimate the power of stupid.

sorry for the thread hijack.

Might be the clips, not done my 8's brakes yet but on my old honda's sometime sthe clips would get bent as well and not hold as tight as it should be. Not sure if this can happen on a 8 or not as i not done a brake job yet.

It was asked already, did you do a proper bed-in process?
Repeated hard stops from high speed to a crawl? See Hawk's bed-in procedure. Each brand has a slightly different method.

I had bad brake squeal with the stock pads. Got the Hawk Ceramics. I'm almost certain they come with new brake shims already attached. Pretty straight forward install. I didn't use any grease at all. Didn't go out of my way to bed them in or anything. Just daily routine after installation. Been noise free since. Still stock rotors. Just lucky I guess.....

i dont think a little squeaking is bad. for example, my dad's 95 993 is suppose to squeak when breaking until he really heats the rotors up.

I seriously doubt any car is "suppose" to squeak....

Did you use new or resurfaced rotors? or did you re-use your current rotors "as-is". Did you use any brake grease on ALL sliding/moving parts? Did you use any "desqueal" on the back of the pad? How about clean up both the hub and rotor surfaces?

Nothing special. Plain ol stock rotors. Removed the old pads, gave everything a quick spray with some brake cleaner and installed the new pads. Done with everything in an hour.

They are pre-burnished, not pre-bedded.

You need to bed them on to the rotor. There's an important transfer of compound on to the rotor which is necessary for the pad and rotor to work together. This occurs during the bed-in process. If you don't bed your pad on to the rotor properly, you're going to experience the symptoms which you are describing.

Hey thanks for the reading Swoope , I'll give it a try tommorrow, after I pull them out and clean them. Hopefully that will work .

It will probably be hard to do as written , considering there are so many car on the road . Even early morning there are cars out there. Trust me I know I start work at 5 AM in the morning. I'll do the best I can ....

You will hear from by Monday.

Removed the old pads, gave everything a quick spray with some brake cleaner and installed the new pads.
This is a late hit, but did you sand the rotors? You need to at least break the glaze when just replacing pads. Medium to fine emery cloth, circular pattern.

Okay , so I did what I said . Took everything apart and cleaned everything. Use breake cleaner and brake grease. I spend a half hour on each side cleaning it and greasing some of the parts.I was a little **** but I wanted to get this right and right I got it. I drove it that Saturday and Sunday and did't hear a thing . Hopefully I won't hear a squeal from those pads , ever.

Thank for all your help guys ..........
