Best value in a lightweight wheel
Hey guys/gals,
I was wondering what all your thoughts were on lightweight wheels to use for autocross. I went today and it was so fun, except to losing to those with slicks. I am planning on getting Hoosier A3S04's on whatever rims I get. I love Volks Gram Lights just looking for some other opinions, hopefully better "Value's". Thanks in advance.
These look hard imo, very functional look with slicks :D

Hey-
I'm Elliot (or Chops), the guy with the Yellow 8 at Qualcomm on Saturday-
If your looking for the butt-kicker DOT Legal R-Compound, the kumho V710 in a 245/35/18 is the one you want. From what I've read lurking on various forums the hoosier is not only slower, but has a shorter life span. For proof, check out the prosolo results in B Stock: http://www.scca.com/_Filelibrary/File/solo-05finale.pdf Myself, hoping for longevity, went with a Kumho Ecsta V700, 265/35/18. Impressions after 3 events:
1. R Compounds are fun, and addictive.
2. Negative Camber and toe-out on the front = good
3. They don't seem to lose grip when they get hot, not greasy feeling at all. I haven't tried cooling them between runs yet, but I don't think it will have an impact with these tires.
4. Judging by the wear on the Ecsta 700's, I should have spent the extra 80 bucks and got the 710's. Buy the 710's.
Wheels:
Just grab some used stock wheels, they show up all the time in the F/S section. Some stock wheels are reputed to be significantly lighter as they were made by a different supplier, I have no information other than that.
SSR Comps are the lightest, like 16 lbs a wheel
SSR GT something or others are like 17-18 lbs if I remember correctly and were on sale at tire rack last time I looked.
www.good-win-racing.com had a blurb on the potential for Enkei RP-F1's in the correct offset being special ordered, again around 17-18 lbs, but much cheaper than the SSR's. The Goodwin project Rx-8 is the Winning Blue one that ran STU on Saturday.
You ran some good times on Saturday, down in the 74's if I remember right. Hopefully I'll see you out there again-

Hmmm. I really should get down to Qualcomm and try out this AutoX thing!!! Especially as there are forum members down there.
I have no real answer for you. I have heard that TireRack are going to be bring a new wheel make to the mix which will be cheap and lightweight. No ETA though. Their Kazara wheels can get pretty light. That's if you are going for 'value'. Also check out the Enkei rims. They are a good weight/price ratio. SSRs are a little more expensive, but a little lighter still.
Don't forget the Mazdaspeed wheels. You can get these at a good price if you shop around. Probably cheaper than SSR Comps.
I have to be honest about the VOLKS though. Nowdays they are as much bling as functional. That is why the price is so high. Oh, and BTW, the MazdaSpeeds are actually VOLKS.

Stock class means you stick with 18x8" wheels but can stick 275 Hoosiers on them. STU means you can run wider wheels. Remember what the class limitations are.

Chops, Thanks for the kind words. I ran 74.844 still getting a little loose. What did you get down to? Under 72? Looked fast to me, and seeing your slicks was just teasing me. I hope to get down there more often but I work in sales and do not get enough weekends off. Thanks for everyones input the search continues, Enkei is looking good.
