AutoX wheels and tires

Ok, so i am now hooked on soloII. I would like to go ahead and purchase wheels and tires specific to this pursuit. I have the mods in my sig, and i was classed in SM2 at the last race(does that sound right?). It is my understanding that i am unlimited in my wheel and tire selection at this level? Some suggestions so far have been the new Azenis and the Victorracer for tires. My next question is what size wheel to run? 17" or 18" (advantages/disadvantages) and how wide? stick with 8 or try and get 9 in there?

All suggestions are greatly appreciated, especially if you participate in this type of racing. Any wheel suggestions (good bang for buck?) Right now i am interested in the enkei NT03+M's. But i feel the money would probably be better spent on quality rubber as opposed to bling bling wheels. Although i would like to keep my stock wheels and tires for the street.

THanks again,

Mike

I would email or call Doug Gill, SCCA solo tech guy, and get a rulling on the RX8 class with your mods. I would have thought SM, but if they say it is sports car based then it is SM2.

As far as tires and wheels the widest you can fit. In most cases you will find the fast natl level guys, SM2, SM, ASP, BSP, ESP cars use 17"s. The reason is beyond that, 18"s, it gets hard to put power down due to lack of sidewall and the 18"s weigh more. I would run a 275-40-17 on the widest wheel that will fit, my guess 17"X9" all the way around, that will keep a good front-rear balance and allow you to rotate tires for max life. I have seen the 275-40-17 on an RX8 with a 17"X8" wheel with no problem. However the tire needs to be on a bigger wheel, 9"-10" wide, to work at its best.

As far as tires, stay away from the falkens, they are true street tires and wont stand a chance in SM2. The Kumho Victoracer is a great tire. Last a long time and is very quick. Once you improve as a driver and need those last few tenths go for the kumho V710, shorter life, more money, but way fast.

Added bonus, the 17" stuff is less money than the 18"s.

Look forward to seeing that turbo beast at a future event.

p.s. there is a natl event at the end of the month in norcal.... road trip.
