All season with snow/hills

So as some of you may know, some d-bag backed into me a little over a week ago. This brought to my attention how crappy my tire tread has gotten, so time to replace them. I don't have the spending cash to get a dedicated set of snow tires so for the time being it's going to have to be all-season tires.

After a bit of searching the forums, the Yokohama AVID W4S tires sounded pretty nice. My problem is that I now live in Utah where it seems many people can't drive anyway (no offense Utahns) and it has been getting some decent snow here the past few years. There are plenty of roads/stop lights on inclines and I'm looking for a tire that get me to and from work without sliding backwards into someone else.

So all in all, people who have used Yokohama AVID W4S or other all season tires in snowy conditions, please let me know what your recommendations are. I need to order these things in the next few days unfortunately.

Thank you for the help.

If you've got hills and snow, you should probably get snow tires. The general idea is that you can pay now for tires or you can pay later with getting stuck, an accident or your life.

If you really can't afford to then I would avoid anything in the ultra high performance all season (UHPAS) category. Generally speaking, the "higher" the performance of an all season tire, the worse they are in the snow (larger tread blocks, fewer sipes, less forgiving rubber compounds, etc). You may even want to look away from the high performance all season (HPAS) category and go for something in the grand touring all season (GTAS) category.

I got away with some UHPAS tires in the snow in central IL for a while because there's little elevation change and I'm stupid. It really sucked. Now that I've moved to northern I'm either going to get some real winter tires or just garage the car for the most part and drive the wife's 4wd hyundai. I haven't decided which yet since I'm still getting used to life in the 'burbs and city.

I used these tires in Minnesota winter on my last car (svt focus). The dry grip was not as good as the stock but they are better than any other all season in the winter.
