again, when you set the rear up to be drifting loose the front grip becomes almost unimportant

drifting is all about appearances and styling points, not performance

try drifting at any top level autox or road race event where true cornering performance matter and see just how badly you get crushed time wise

This is starting to go askew again. Drifting is not about time therefore drifting at an autocross or HPDE would not only be irrelevant, it would be counterproductive.

The stretched tire look stems from German automobiles back when a Government standard stated tires had to sit X amount away from the lip of the fender. Smaller stretches began there and it simply became more and more extreme. Stretching the sidewall does increase responsiveness but there is a point at which it is only so much for that reason. Front grip does not become unimportant as you need a certain level of predictability and controllability, drifting =/= doughnuts...

c41250n Thanks for the posts. I remember when you posted those 9.5 +25 and everyone was on your case about rubbing so horrible back in the day. That was a long time ago! PM me specs of the new wheels!

Your just a hater, hate on everything u don't understand, and only accept what you think is right. I don't think there has been a single thread on rx8club where you haven't hated on something. Drifting is not the fastest way, it is more fun.

stretched tires also help out lower hp cars with getting sideways easier.

Personally if I had the money I'd run rt615s up front and some junk *** tire out back.

Sorry but that does not make any sense. Run a stiffer rear setup with skinnier tires and it will break loose with ease. But as has been mentioned, drift is more about looks then performance. Hence the need for judges.

In drifting you slide the car continuously. The rx8 is very very slow in stock form, when you run tires like 615's or z1's all around in 245. it wont slide easily, u can initiate and go in, but to make it keep going is a pain in the ***. So you need shitty tires in the rear to slide easier, and good tires in the front to have grip. That's what he means.

Most of the rx8s in formula D run 265 all around, but that is because they make power.

Drifting has nothing to do with the look of a car: its judge based on how close you get within the clipping points, how fast you enter the turn, how much speed you maintain, how much smoke you produce, and how much angle you get.

The goal is to go as sideways as possible, as close as possible to the clipping points with the maximum speed.

I know what drifting is as I'm sure most here do. The fact is it is a judged event.

A proper suspension setup for drift combined with the correct tire is all you need. You do not need wide wheels and stretched rubber. Unless of course you are being judged on style...

thanks for the complement on my SSR's guys, give you guys a hint, my next wheels are gonna be Volk GT-F, not custom order, so think what size and offset i'll be getting. not something too aggressive, not aggressive enough, thinking to put spacers.

for people who doesn't understand why we stretch tires. first, we want stiffer sidewall, it makes the car more respondsive. Second, stretching tire is a style (VIP/Hella Flush), just like why people put body kits on their car? Why use 3 piece wheels with fat lip? mainly for the looks. Being hella flush, stretching tires is a must, and you guy gotta give props to the people who're doing hella flush.

I don’t understand why you guys keep talking about performance and all that, we're on a street. How often do we put the car to the limit on the streets, so stretching narrow tires on wide wheels is not a matter, as long as you know your car and you have the skill, you'll be fine. That is also why we have another of track wheel and tires for track. Driving skill is way more important then car performance, that's why you see a lot of miatas on a track passing all those high horsepower cars.

P.S. Drifting is super fun!!

Stretching is for style. Nothing more. If you want a stiffer sidewall then run a lower profile tire that is geared towards your need.

i will have to disagree with you. using lower profile tires is gonna mess with the over all diameter, means you'll be getting smaller diameter then stock. when you get tires, you'll want to get the closer over all diameter as stock.

I'm a common sense person and I understand a lot more than you'll ever know.

If posing is fun, then have at it, but posing is posing. Stop trying to make it out as anything else and there won't be any disagreement between us. Drifting is all about looking cool, period. The cars get loaded up with parts more geared for looking cool than actual performance just to look cool.

If I hate anything it's that the drifting fans think that drifting is an actual motorsport and it's the proper way to drive a car fast. IMO drifting promotes a general "Fast & Furious" ignorance WRT true motorsports activities.

All I said was your a hater, and your proving my point.

How is anyone posing? By having cars that look good? I've been to several HPDE's and autocross, went to one last sunday.

I NEVER said drifting is the fastest way around a turn, what I said was "Drifting is not the fastest way, it is more fun." Are you just making up facts and stating that I said it?

Get the **** out of the thread if your only goal is to argue. You do this **** in almost every thread.

I never made drifting out to be anything other than what it is. Go back and check all of my replies to your comments.

I suppose you hate rally, time attack, and gymkhana too.

"I'm a common sense person and I understand a lot more than you'll ever know."

ego much?

You think your so cool, you drive in a parking lot, and hate on everyone else.

lets get this thread back to topic.
