I've read that people are putting on 245/40's on their stock rims when they change their tires.... just to be sure im reading correctly.. they should fit well on the stock rim? and will they still wear correctly? i have no doubt they will fit, but will i get more wear down the center of the tire than the outside because of them being pinched in?

Also i see people on here are raving about the kumho ecsta spt tires... good choice or should i be looking at others? I definitely do NOT want to spend $200+ a tire, which is what the RE040's cost...

SPT are decent everyday street tires, but if you want better grip there are better choices. For all out grip, the Falken Azenis RT-615. for a very good everyday all around tire the Toyo T1R's (Both way under $200 a tire).

yeah.. i did some more searching after posting this and i'm reading that unless i take the car on track.. the spt are more than enough on the road and that i'll probably won't even be able to push the spt's to their max use much less a better tire.. at least this is the input i've been getting thus far

I'm heavily leaning towards doing this as well when I get my car out this spring. So the Ecsta SPTs are only available in the 245/40 R18 size and it will fit the stock rims?

Yeah I have 26K on the stock tires now and will need to get new tires in the next 4K. I'm in the same boat, I want decent 245 ( I don't track) under $200. Let me know which tire you go with. Super Autobachs in Stanton, CA seem to have some great prices on Toyo. I will check it out this weekend and post my research.

A month ago I had my tires replaced at Autobachs after 35K on the Potenzas. Probably I could have gone to 40K but it got so loud and plus the rains, worn out tires will be no good. I got 4 T1R; 245/40 -18. So far they are quiet. Grip is pretty much as the potenzas but I think I can push them more. They feel a bit mushy compared with the potenzas but it can easily corrected by having them at 36 psi. Just play around the the pressure to see what you like. The total out of door with all the fees, taxes, etc. is about $854
Unfortunately, I hit something on the freeway that cut my rear driver side tire at side wall (after only one week of getting them) So I had to buy another tire. The good thing is they normally carry that size and model. So no wait for special order.

ouch.. that would ruin my day to bust a tire a week after getting it :P

morotorman: you can get the spt's in any size.. but a lot of people are fitting 245/40's on the stock rims with no problems so might as well it might slip a little more on wet pavement however, but should be nicer on dry pavement and corner better too

I'm running 255/35/18s on stock rims. You can fit 265/35/18s, as well.

245/40/18 is fine on an 8" rim. the air inside the tire supports the middle. if you are wearing the middle slower, then you have *way* too little air in the tires.

you will also curb your wheels a lot less with a 245.

I have the BFG KDW2's in 245/40 18 size, and they went on with no problems, and look great too. The flame tread pattern is cool and they grip wayyy better than the stock potenza's both wet and dry. There's a slightly winding Interstate off ramp that advises a 25 mph exit speed. I would take it at 65 with just a hint of tire squeal with the potenzas. With the BFG's I can take it at 75 with no squeal at all! I got all four from Tire Rack for about $165 each. I would also advise getting the roadside hazard warranty, just in case you have a blow-out or anything.
