Wanna know if the stock tire stretched on a 9 wide is pushing it and doable, or just stupid and can lead me to trouble? I have a set of stock tires just sitting here, figured I might as well burn off the thread on them if i can.
Not really, my tires have pretty good traction actually. Works fine for the street.
I might get 235 or 245's next, but I don't know...I don't want really beefy looking tires. Plus the 225's fit my budget better at that time.

i know a guy running 225s with a 450whp dodge neon.
and apparently that is the max tire width he can run. car choice fail. lol. anyway...
245s are a big performance difference rex. i can understand about budget though.

See my sig for my set up. No issuse what so ever. Been running this set up sence last summer.
I'm going to get better tires soon but I have no issues with the stock tires. I will lose some grip on turns but thats norm for this car anyway.

I have been running those on my 18x9 for the last 4000 miles no problems. I drive hard a little and have had no problems. Disregard the gap in the rear. The S-tech where not installed in the back yet.

It's not really my personal preference as I'd prefer a 245/40 on a 9", but Emilio from 949Racing runs a 225/45 on a 9" for his Miata for racing applications. 225/45 on 9" has been reported to have much success for the Miatas and are faster than 225/45 on 8" by a noticeable amount. Having said that I'm sure a 245/40 on 9" is even faster, but the NA/NB Miatas can't fit that without fender modifications.
If you really must, I'd say go for it.

it's OK for the purpose of using up the tires, but switch to 255 - 275 size for the replacements, the idea of going small on tire size to stiffen the sidewall is a bogus misconception and the sizes noted will typically fit without issue if your wheels are in the proper offset range
