225/45/18 stretched on a 18 x 9 wide, stupid or just pushing it?

Wanna know if the stock tire stretched on a 9 wide is pushing it and doable, or just stupid and can lead me to trouble? I have a set of stock tires just sitting here, figured I might as well burn off the thread on them if i can.

meh, if they're expendable, go for it, I had 225/35 on an 8.5 for a while, so you should be fine.

bose 03-28-2009 11:04 AM

It might work just fine, but it WILL look shitty.

i do right now....but 9 dam thats asking for at least 235/245 at least,

r0tor 03-28-2009 12:31 PM

pointless and stupid

Transam kid 01 03-28-2009 12:36 PM

You're better off spending an extra few bucks getting wider tires than chancing the stretch

ZumnRx8 03-28-2009 02:26 PM

i have been on stretch for 2 years and no problems. but u are stretching a tad too much.

Peppy@kacework 03-28-2009 02:44 PM

Don't do it. Even Zumn is telling you not to be like him and stretch tires.

ZumnRx8 03-28-2009 03:04 PM

yeah dude ur stretching .5 bit too far, and that might weaken the walls

SiLVeRE8 03-28-2009 04:28 PM

get 245!

05rex8 03-28-2009 04:36 PM

I have stock sized tires on 8.5 inch wide rims. Personally i think it looks great, but I probably wouldn't want to stretch more than that.

You're running 225s on a turbo 8?

05rex8 03-28-2009 05:36 PM

if that's what the stock tire size is, then yes.

yeah, 225 is stock. Do you get grip problems?

05rex8 03-28-2009 05:48 PM

Not really, my tires have pretty good traction actually. Works fine for the street.

I might get 235 or 245's next, but I don't know...I don't want really beefy looking tires. Plus the 225's fit my budget better at that time.

kersh4w 03-28-2009 09:55 PM

i know a guy running 225s with a 450whp dodge neon. and apparently that is the max tire width he can run. car choice fail. lol. anyway...

245s are a big performance difference rex. i can understand about budget though.

05rex8 03-28-2009 10:03 PM

yeah I will see what happens next time around for tires

I have nowhere near 450whp anyways....

my car is still a torqueless wonder, turbo or not, lol.

DOMINION 03-28-2009 11:57 PM

See my sig for my set up. No issuse what so ever. Been running this set up sence last summer.
I'm going to get better tires soon but I have no issues with the stock tires. I will lose some grip on turns but thats norm for this car anyway.

djcharlee 03-29-2009 12:06 AM

I have been running those on my 18x9 for the last 4000 miles no problems. I drive hard a little and have had no problems. Disregard the gap in the rear. The S-tech where not installed in the back yet.

Check sig for setup

^ cool! those are really just stock tires? not bad, bro. not bad at all. you got close up pics?

XDEEDUBBX 07-01-2009 07:51 AM

seriously thats not much of a stretch

LionZoo 07-01-2009 01:37 PM

It's not really my personal preference as I'd prefer a 245/40 on a 9", but Emilio from 949Racing runs a 225/45 on a 9" for his Miata for racing applications. 225/45 on 9" has been reported to have much success for the Miatas and are faster than 225/45 on 8" by a noticeable amount. Having said that I'm sure a 245/40 on 9" is even faster, but the NA/NB Miatas can't fit that without fender modifications.

If you really must, I'd say go for it.

I personally like the geometry of the car with the nose lower than the rear... it looks really aggressive. Sort of like you are constantly hard braking into a turn.

TeamRX8 07-06-2009 01:33 AM

it's OK for the purpose of using up the tires, but switch to 255 - 275 size for the replacements, the idea of going small on tire size to stiffen the sidewall is a bogus misconception and the sizes noted will typically fit without issue if your wheels are in the proper offset range
